  • What Motherboard?

Okay, I know this has been beat to death but I am considering an Athlon Thunderbird 800 with 128 meg of RAM. The local shop here has two motherboards for it. One is an Aopen MK33 and one is the Biostar M7VKB. I really need at least one ISA slot so if I go with one of these it would have to be the Biostar.

Will it work well for editing or should I look elsewhere? I use the RainbowRunner on a Mystique 220.

I currently am able to to 704x480 capturing and editing although sometimes playback can be a problem. Right now I have a Pentium 233 with 64 meg of RAM.

    Thanks-Phil

What I did was to take my Marvel and Live! to the shop and I said I'd buy if they work with the motherboard. We spent an hour together installing everything. Then it was seen to work without a hitch and I walked out of the shop with the computer under my arm! This is the only way you can be SURE.

Obviously, if you buy from a computer hypermarket, it would be doubtful if they would co-operate, but I went to a small neighbourhood shop and possibly paid 5% more, but it was worth it.

Depending on what and how much you want to capture, I would seriously consider trying to get an Abit KTV-Raid motherboard. It has an onboard IDE ATA-100 raid chipset, better for video capture. It also has an ISA slot. Its been getting excellent reviews.

Thanks for the replies. I was looking at a small mom and pop store as well. They are very helpful.

I like the idea of the Abit KT7-RAID. I checked it out today and think that would definately be a great choice. I was surprised it didn't cost much more than the standard KT7.

I managed to stabilize my system for a while so I don't have to jump on anything right away. Now I can take the time and look into this further.

        Thanks for the help- PhilH

          Just a quick update.

There was a computer show here over the weekend and after hearing the 440BX chipset was stable for video work, coupled with the advice I got on this thread regarding the Abit board w/raid, I compromised and got an Abit BX-133 RAID motherboard.

I got 128 meg of memory and a Celeron 600 CPU. (Yes this is the biggest compromise but it is a big step up from the 233 I was running.)

The system is rock solid now and my stress level has leveled out. I can actually work now without endless blue screens and reboots.

          Thanks for the imput.
