  • MSP7.0 + DV camera control question

    Hmmm.

Since I'm using the test MSP7.0 version, I begin to question the way 7.0 interacts with various DV cameras. I mean, at first I only noticed the non-functionality of a DSR DVCAM deck, but now it appears the problematic behaviour goes far beyond the DVCAM domain, and a couple of camera's give me problems where I did not expect them to do so. I mean, I've had my fair share of problems with Canon XL1 machines, but I'm talking Sony here : not the kind of gear I had troubles with in the past so far.

Now, I'm seeing various problems on 3 different test machines. It might be something I'm doing wrong, on the other hand my personal camera (Panasonic MX300) behaves 100%. The only thing these machines have in common is the XP OS. (I mean, the version, not the licence !).

Does anyone have experience with let's say a Sony 950 ? Its behaviour when used with MSP7.0 is pretty funky over here. If somebody out there tells me "it works like a charm over here", I know I'll have to search for a problem within the test setups.

By the way, the 950 for example behaves perfectly using P6.5 on those testmachines.

    Any advice is welcome,

    Kris

There are at least 7 ways that DV cameras/decks can interact with MSP7. Can you please be specific which ones work and which ones don't and what happens in each, with each type of cam/drive?
    1. Straight capture
    2. Scan and capture
    3. Instant preview
    4. "Normal" preview (rendered)
    5. Print-to-tape
    6. Export
    7. Capture in MF2

If you and all others with problems could give me this info, it would help me sort out what needs to be looked at.

For example, the following shows what I am experiencing with my DRV-1000P DVCAM deck
    1. Capture. Works fine with both mini-DV and DVCAM tapes
    2. Scan and Capture. Basicly works, but lack of time stamping on tapes prevents automation
    3. Instant preview. Streams out but DVCAM drive does not go into Record mode
    4. Normal preview. As for 3.
    5. Print-to-tape. As for 3. Can record VHS tape via DV>analogue bridge
    6. Export. Exports a DV file to DVCAM drive normally: no problems in recording
    7. Capture in MF2: problematic but undefined at this time.

This would help a lot: please

You're right, Brian. I should've noted the problems down. Of course I didn't (stupid me), so at this time I can only make a clear statement about the problems I see with the cam besides me, beeing a 950.

      1) Straight capture works, but I have to start the cam by hand pressing it's play button. Navigation (rewind/FF) does not work, nor is the cam stopped at the end of capture. (not surprisingly as I have to START it by hand too).

      2) Scan and Capture : does not work. Cam seems to ignore any commands issues towards it.

      3) Instant Preview : display stays blank. No error.

      4) Rendered Preview : nothing either.

      5) Print-to-tape (from timeline) : nothing either.

      6) Works.

      7) Have not tried it.

Adobe6.5 on the same machine : no problem what so ever. Scenalyser seems to work too, haven't tried it on a complete tape though.

      Thanks for the attention,
      Kris

        HELP WANTED, Please

Nice info, Kris, thanks. Will you be able to report similarly on all your other cams, as you access them, please.

To all others: If you have problems of a similar nature, please reply to the above points, not forgetting your camera/drive model, MSP version, O/S and whether PAL/NTSC (also any comments on the problem). I'm making up a matrix, as the problems are different with each model. This will be sent to the Ulead gurus for examination.

I've announced this also on the MUG-SW forum. If anyone knows any other forums which deal with MSP, please copy. Results can be sent directly to me at MSP-DVprobs@bnellis.com if you do not wish to be public.

        Thanks for you co-operation, everyone.

          I will, Brian.

I come in touch mostly with Sony and Panasonic gear, and that's the main reason why I'm so surprised with these problems. My old NV5 Panasonic for example, which behaved splendidly for as long as I care to remember also gives problems. (I gave it to my dad a few years ago). Odd, because this old little cam worked correctly even in the early days of DV-editing, in a time when the software was far from stable.

Thanks, John. This may give the answer to Kris' problem.

I've just checked the MS database and there appear to be a number of IEEE-1394 problems, especially with XP but little other specific to the DV print problems enumerated, which happen in XP and W2k and possibly 98SE.

I have the same problem with a Sony GV-D800. Have had this problem since MSP 6.02. Version 7.0 has not fixed it. I don't think it is an operating system bug as SCLive can control the deck perfectly on the same PC.

                    Control Problems with Sony Walkmans

                    Brian:

1 - can capture if I control the deck manually
2 - "scan" is greyed out
3 - Preview does not go to deck
4 - normal preview only appears on PC screen
                    5 - print - does not go to tape(deck)
6 - export works but must control deck manually
                    7 - have not tried

                    OS is XP Home. NTSC.

You should note that SCLive operates the deck (control, capture, scan, write) perfectly on the same PC under the same OS.

Also, MSP does control my Sony D8 camera properly if connected in place of the deck. Problem is specific to the Sony Walkman decks and MSP.
