          It depends on what you plan on using them for? Just to have a video for personal use? Do you plan on re-using the video to make a DVD or VCD? If you are looking for help in deciding which to use, then we need to know what your target audience is.

            I voted for XVid, but it can be a bit of a problem finding a good build. It also supports the new mpeg4 thingies for free unlike divx.

            The main reason I like it is becasue it workes VERY well for captureing, I can do full PAL at 720x576 and not drop any frames...

            But It may just because I love opensource and free software.

            One thing with xvid is that playback problems are not uncommon. Divx was good for a while, but as soon as they started asociating with GATOR advertising , I knew that was the end for divx for me.

            So I encode all my stuff with xvid/ogg vorbis....but when Ogg gets it video compression codec up and running I will probably switch to that.
