  • New ad....

    Sound with webads.

Has anyone but me noticed that the netstocks.com webad is VERY ANNOYING?

I can't wait for the next time a search engine involuntarily takes me to an X-rated site with the wife & kids in the room.

    Wonderful....

        Doc

Patrick suggested to me to try Webwasher some weeks ago. It is certainly not without its disadvantages but it does have its advantages, as well.

I have been using it consistently pretty well all the time for some time. It certainly reduces the ad content by at least 90% and it also stops the annoying habit of other sites coming up when you leave one and similar bad commercial practice. (One such site, for an enviro-technical agency, which I visit regularly, has a sister .org and the two used to switch between themselves in a vicious circle: the only way out was to either start a new page or close down the browser: Webwasher breaks that.) It also stops some auto-pop-up pages, but not all and not requested ones.

I've been meaning to thank Patrick for his tip, and take this opportunity to do so.

The down side? I don't know to what extent it is due to Webwasher: it may be something else +/- coincidental. 1) The first web site called on in a booted-up session has a pause of about 15 or 20 seconds before anything starts to happen (consistent). subsequent ones are normal. 2) the auto dial-up is OK at the start of a session but later ones may exhibit a pause of up to half a minute between doing whatever it is that calls it and the dial-up message box appearing and the dialling starting. These are small prices to pay for no ads, at least with the way I work. Maybe there are work-arounds, but I haven't researched them.

heh, webwasher sucks... IMO. I've been using something a little bit more powerful (almost too powerful in some cases) for almost a year now. Get the webwasher alternative here:
          http://members.tripod.com/Proxomitron/

To sum the program up, it's a proxy filter for incoming html. It will remove damn near anything you want it to from a webpage while it loads. There is a price though. As with most html filters, the more you filter the more cpu it will use doing it. And it's not going to work 100% with all sites, especially ones running advanced java scripts (duh). Those are honestly the only drawbacks of using this program at all. One of the neato features it has is a passthrough toggle that disables all filtering instantaneously at the click of a mouse button. So when your getting ready to load that nasty site that doesn't like proxomitron filtering, you can still get to it doing very little effort. For people who are bandwidth limited... this thing can save lots of time. It's very easy to figure out too. The hardest part, honestly, is configuring it initally (at least in IE). If you've ever setup IE for proxy web, then it's a sinch. Oh did I mention it's low ram usage, add-on filter support, and the fact it's free? This program is another one of those gems for modem peasants.

Oh, Absalom, my son, my son!

Why does Webwasher suck? It seems practically identical in operation to yours, including a click to disable it. I find it very flexible and it is set up to do 99.9% of what you need without any manual settings required. Of course, you can add more and more filters, if you want, but I have made very few modifs to the default.
