AC3 codec
This isnt't exactly related to the Matrox specifically, but I recently acquired the Lexx first season movies on DVD, and noticed that the VOB files directly off of the DVD disc play correctly in Media Player, but there is no audio (because an appropriate codec could not be found). I assume the VOB files aren't encrypted, since the video playback is perfect, but I wondered if anyone knows of a Windows-codec type of AC3 decoder. It would be convenient at times to be able to toss VOB files into Media Player to see which files are which.

umm, as far as I know... media player has always had full dvd support since 6.x. That means encrypted or decrypted VOB support also. I've had problems with DVD menus being screwy with MP 6.4, but the AC3 streams off DVDs works fine too. It should play them without any special need for a codec, unless the dvd itself was made incorrectly. If it does need a codec then it is something rare that I've never encountered before. I've rarely had problems with DVDs and MS media player working.
However, I do know that when you create a DIVX/AC3 AVI, you need some type of AC3 decoding codec installed to decode the AC3 stream. On top of that, I've yet to see any "free" codecs that do this yet either. Most the codecs out there that do this are taken from commercial software dvd players. Their directshow filters are removed from the package and used soley for the purpose of having the ability to downmix/decode AC3 streams from ripped DVDs. The moral implications from using a single file from a commercial package without paying for it is entirely up to you. I personally use Intervideo's directshow filter (version 2.0 I beleive). It allows me to take any AVI with an AC3 audio stream and downmix it. It also lets me take that same AC3 stream and redirect it through my soundcards SPDIF output to my surround receiver. I get full DTS 5.1 functionality this way.
I'm not too knowledgable about VOB format, but I do know that DVDs can come in AC3, PCM, and mpeg audio flavors. You didn't mention if the dvd had sound in a standalone player or another software dvd player other than MS media player. If you do get sound using those, then you can narrow the problem down to being a media player problem possibly. Otherwise, you might have a DVD that was made with really crappy DVD authoring software.... which I've witnessed also.
P.S. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your Lexx DVDs? I breathed a huge sigh of relief when the creators announced the 4th season was confirmed recently. I'm a proven lexxaholic. I really can't get enough of that show. It's the best series running right now, without a doubt. I honestly bought my G-Runner initially just to capture all the Lexx episodes off my satellite dish. ;P

Some of PowerDVD or WinDVD newest version (I don't remember) should support DTS decoding. Try to play the file with them.
