  • Microsoft Announces 64-Bit Windows For AMD Athlon 64 Processors

Does this mean that ONLY 64 bit AMD processors will run on this version of XP? If so then there will have to be another build for Intel 64 bit processors, right? Then apps would have to be different as well for each XP version, AMD and Intel.

Hmm, I'm a little confused here (as usual). I know Opteron will run on current 32 bit platforms, but running natively on this new 64 bit version seems to preclude other 64 processors, unless Intel used AMD's instruction set, which seems unlikely.

Well right now the only 64 bit processor Intel has is called the Itanium but it is only available for servers.

I'm eagerly waiting for the 64 bit AMD chip to be released, maybe that will drive Intel to release something similair

      Cheers,
      Elie

I believe that Intel does have something in the works called Prescott or something like that.

Prescott is just a P4 with a 13 new instructions... still 32 bit

I find it hard to believe that Intel would sit idly by while MS and AMD jointly develop the "next" version of Windows for 64 bit computing, without any plans for a competing Intel solution.

Either this is vapor-ware (unlikely) or Intel has something up thier sleeve (very likely).

You can bet that Microsoft isn't going to put all of its eggs in the AMD basket. Whatever Intel comes up with in the 64 bit processor market, MS will be ready with a OS port that will run seamlessly without having to recode the software. Just too much money to be made/lost to do otherwise.
