  • Win ME or not to be ?!

    Has anyone got enough knowledge to judge on how good Win ME is for a stable NLE system, as opposed to Win98SE [stable -more or less] & Win2K {which is totally crap} [with Marvel 200 & the Beta tools that don't work properly].

    IMHO ME is just something to make M$ a few bux while Win2K is being straightened out.

    There are some differences in terms of new maintenance features originated in Win2K, but it's basically Win98SE with a new face. As has been shown in the betas of some software & hardware I'm involved with there are some functional differences as well. Mostly these affect stability with *some* Win9x editing software.

    I'd hold off until Win2K is sorted out, probably SP2 & DirectX8 release, then jump straight to it.

      Hi,
      I installed a swedish Win ME, over the Win 98SE (also swedish).
      It was a long way to get ME to work stable, and I am not sure I've get it as aspected.
      ME is, anyway faster then W98SE, if it works.
      It has the Recovery function, which is pretty good. I was forced to use it several time, and it helps.
      If someone captured and edited video with, at least the simplest video tools, will split with laughter over Movie Maker in the Win ME.
      Beleve or not, but the most of European ver. of Win ME doesn,t capture with PAL video. (confirmed by Haig from Matrox)
      All this is not a verdict, but I feel that some day I'll be back with the "good old" Win 98SE.

          As I've said many times, anyone who rushes out to get the latest MS O/S can expect trouble. Always wait at least one year and at least one SP, preferably 2, by which time the major bugs should be ironed out. What MS considers as a marketable product is equivalent to early beta testing in the eyes of some other software manufacturers. Worse, MS don't bother about whether their O/Ss are compatible with third party drivers/software: in fact, I suspect that they may sometimes go out of their way to make it incompatible with some features of competitive software (look at the number of patches that Corel have to produce to make their excellent WordPerfect Office Suite work with each new O/S). As they are now beginning to address video slightly more, expect increasing problems, beyond their stupid attitude with incompatible MPEG4. IOW, what's wrong with 98SE for video work?

            I guess the outcome is FORGET ME for a while... I thought i could get MORE stability + features from ME over 98SE [as well as some performace improvment] Guess not. Thanx guys.

              I think one of the early reviewers really got it right upon pointing out that one of the highly touted new features listed on the side of the box was: "system recovery -- making it easier to restore your system after a crash"

              Not the kind of feature that would be need to be highlighted if stability was improved!

                I installed Win Me on my video editing machine (Celeron OC to 450, 128 MB, Asus 2PB, Matrox Mystic 220 w/ RR, 10 MB IBM system disk, 20 GB and 30 GB Maxtor video disks, and a DV300 (don't laugh it was cheap at the time) running the Pinnacle Beta 2.0 version of DV300 driver and Premier 5.1c plug ins). So far, with one reasonably complex wedding video nearing completion, both Premier and the Pinnacle stuff seem very stable - I would say better than under Win 95B. However, a one-hour project is not really enough to come to a final conclusion.

                  wkulecz;

                  Indeed not the best feature to list if your product is supposed to be "stable" What would be much more impressive would be if such a feature were unncessary.

                      I don't think there is much Linux-ware for editing right now. Mebbe if Micro$oft continues to flub it's S/W releases

                      Back onto the ME issue....Toms Hardware did a test of it and the conclusions page was very interesting. Bypass the details and read this;

                        "If Microsoft would indeed improve the actual OS itself instead of adding so many useless features, we might have a real reason to run out and buy Win Me."
