RGB vs YUY2 -- which is better?

Hello all,

I have a Matrox Marvel G400-TV and am currently working on capturing video from VHS/SVHS tapes and transfering them to VideoCDs.

I found a utility that will unlock the YUY2 capabilities in my Marvel and am not sure I really see a difference between 24bit RGB and YUY2, except that I can fit about twice as much YUY2 in the same space as RGB.

Can someone please give me a suggestion as to which format I should us? The raw RGB/YUY stream is being read into Adobe Premier and then transfered to a VCD MPEG via the Panasonic codec.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

YUY2 is native video data format. RGB is produced by conversion routine.
So, the quality cannot be made better with RGB compared to yuy2.
It is always better to use yuy2.

Isn't YUV (YuY2) two bytes per pixel compared to three bytes for RGB. For uncompressed captures, this is 33% less data per second to be moved. Can make the difference between good captures and tons of drops.

Don't know the number of bits or anything, but I do know I can fit close to twice the amount of video in a YUY2 file (of 1900 Megs) then I can of a RGB 24bit.

The RGB on the Marvel is obtained by caculation of the YUY2 signal. As such it takes more CPU cycles to capture RGB to a codec than just using YUY2 directly.

This is because it's faster to encode;

YUY2 to CODEC

than to encode;

YUY2 to RGB and then to CODEC.

Just wondering if it will work with the Marvel G200.

The utility can be found at http://www.desktopvideoworld.com -- goto the download section.

It is designed for the Marvel cards, so I would assume it will work for the G200. It tells you what it will modify before it does it, so you can back it up without worries.

BTW, what about the rumours of the next software gen for the G400 Marvel having YUV enabled, so we no longer would have to use the Dutchman's patch?
