A_BIT: The correct fix is to note the height of the lever when touching it's stop. Remove the nut holding it. There is a plastic hook also holding it. Work the lever off. Clean the post and inside the hole, alcohol will work. Apply a light grease to the post. Put the lever back on. Screw the nut on until the lever is at the correct height. To align it, play a tape. Note the tape position on the head just before the lever. Review and make sure the height doesn't change. If it does tighten or loosen the nut in 1/8 turn increments and try again. This is the reveiw lever, that is the only function its height will affect.
I can't believe someone wanted $200 to fix it. It's a common problem on that mechanism.

You were right mynx. I was able to get the return arm to free up and move well by taking the arm off and lubing it. Unfortunately, some of the teeth on the cam/gear were already stripped off from previous attempts to load tapes while the arm was frozen.

I found this link to an illustrated version of your very repair instructions.
        http://peach.mie.utoronto.ca/people/...ing-index.html

        * (Is this your web page mynx?) *

In the fourth picture you see a close up of the white cam/gear which in my unit is non-functional due to the 3-4 missing teeth.

Update: I found a replacement gear at this site !!! http://www.iglou.com/studiosound/

If anyone has a trusted source for such things I would be much obliged otherwise I guess it's going to be luck of the draw.

        Thanks again,

        -Anthony

Here's a follow up to my own post in case anyone is wondering about this halo effect I reported---

Last weekend I viewed my DVD copy of Apollo 13 on the same TV. The same halo effect was present in the same scene! Interesting, isn't it? The VCR has been vindicated!

A_BIT: Sorry, I was away for the weekend. No, I don't have a web site. I get them from sony. The other source I usually use has a minimum order.
