    Hi,

I think people have a right to copy their own prebought dvds and cds,but don't think copying rentals is cool. I do have a macrovision free dvd player, which are easily optainable because I have only one svhs on my tv and 2 svhs players and 1 dvd must reach it. The Dvd signal won't go thru the vcr with macrovision enabled. I could have bought a svhs switch box, I suppose. I've never seen the need to copy a good dvd to a vhs. There are also macrovision buster boxes for around 40$. But whats the point of making a vhs copy of a dvd? Just buy dvd x or something similiar and make a dvd copy of a preowned dvd. It will look and sound better. And stores a lot better. My two cents worth. Nunchal

          Might be interesting

It may surprise you, but it's actually not legally forbidden here in Holland (and in some other W-European countries such as Germany) to copy rented DVD's for personal use. Same with rented audio CD's. Copying computer software CD's is forbidden though. There's new European legislation in the making that forbids the circumvention of technical methods (macrovision, CSS etc) of copy-protection. Meaning one may actually copy the rented media as long asone can do so without using illegal techniques. Weird, eh?

But there are plenty of good reasons why one would want to make backup copies of original cd's or DVD's.

I personally won't play original cd's in my car CD player because (a) I hate to see the originals damaged by the high summer temperatures in the glove compartiment and (b) both my Pioneer car CD player and my home DVD player turn out to be extremely picky about those new "enhanced" CD's with built-in copy protection. Some 70% of current top-10 cd's simply won't play on my equipment wich is a terrible P.I.T.A.
Resistance is futile - Microborg will assimilate you.

Which is why all my stuff gets ripped to MP3's for use in the various vehicles CD/MP3 players. What's also nice is that several albums fit on one ISO CD.

                Hi all,
just a thought about music companies that in my opinion have become greedy. Well, I have many LPs (vinyl records) from my youth which means that I have paid royalties to the various music companies, shouldn’t it be fair to have the right to buy the same music in CD and pay less since I have paid once for the royalties? (for example trading in the original LP record).
OF COURSE NOT, they need to make more money

                  Yia sou, Mits

Keep the vinyls. If they are in good shape, they are probably worth more on the collectors' market than several CDs. But if you wish to re-record then onto CD-Rs, why not, provided they are for your own personal use.
