  • Beta Santa Cruz drivers?

Anybody try the 4186's yet? Just posted on the Voyetra site on 5-15-03. Just curious to see if there is a reason to try it out, I didn't see a readme or changelog.

EDIT, installed and found the changelog:

    What's New?
    ===========

    v4186
    * EAX 2.0 fully compliant. Query for BasicSupport of Deferred EAX
    properties now works.

    * Speaker configuration no longer jumps to different configurations
    while starting games.

    * 3d hw acceleration DSP task management improved.

    * Bugchecks on uninstalling resolved. NOTE: the 4184 may bugcheck
    as it's uninstalled.

    v4184
    * Optimized Installer. Removes old driver and installs new one without
having to run the install twice. Also installs in 98SE/ME/2K/XP.

    * MP9 5.1 support under XP. Now you can play multi-channel WMA files!

    * SRS CSII 5.1 plugin for MP9 works with this driver.

    * AC3 digital over SPDIF working in 98SE (with MS QFE 269601USA8.EXE)

    * Fixed game port conflict with MPX/nForce motherboards. May not work in
    98se.

    * Enhanced MIDI playback with better timing and fixed region exclusive
    (hihats)

    * Fixed DSound volume scaling. Now distant sounds in games are more audible.

    * Fixed Center/Sub volumes to better match front/rear output levels.

    * Fixed distortion/intermittent noise playing multiple channels at various
    sample rates.

    * Synced up the windows speaker modes with Santa Cruz Control Panel.

    * Optimized boot time and resume from standby times.

    Known Issues in this Beta:
    ==========================
    * XP ONLY: Santa Cruz effects do not work while in 6 speaker mode.
    Win 2k/me/98se are fine.

    * You may have to restore the default settings in the Santa Cruz Control
Panel to see the default speaker setting you selected during the install.

    * If the Santa Cruz tray icon (blue speaker) does not appear, simply run the
Santa Cruz Control Panel from the Start Menu or Windows Control Panel and
then right click on it and select the 'Load System Tray' from the context
    menu.

I don't see "restored VU meters in XP" anywhere on that list .

And you probably won't either. It is a real shame too, though the VUMeter that I found is pretty nice and free, it was nice to set your levels in the mixer itself. Maybe if enough of us started pesterring them they could work on it. Can't be that hard if there are free apps that do it.

It doesn't seem to like the MAD MP3 decoder plugin for Winamp, atleast set at 32 bit. First BSOD (with the good old physical memory dump) I have had on this system ever. Set the original decoder as default and no problems.

why do you set it to 32 bit? the TBSC only does 16 bit, and 20-bit internally.

Well, it is one of those things that I clicked on until it sounded really good! The old drivers worked fine with it so I left it alone. I was actually pretty surpised hat it worked as well since I didn't think it was 32-bit anyway. I may try it , but at 16 bit the WinAmp decoder sounds about he same.

For high quality sound processing you'd want a 24bit/96khz card anyhow. On a budget there is the Echo MIA or MIAMIDI. They're not gaming cards though since they don't support some of the popular gaming audio protocols in their drivers...more like budget studio cards.

Then there's always the LAYLA24 (8x8 I/O w/rack mount BOB) GINA24 (2x8 I/O w/tabletop BOB) and other studio cards of their ilk at 2x to 4x the cost.

Those cost too much for prosumer use. Something along the lines of the M-Audio Revolution 7.1 would be more appropriate.

MIA costs $179 street (or less), comes with Steinberg's Cubasis VST (supports up to 48 audio & 62 midi tracks) and it has low-latency multiclient drivers; meaning it's light on the system resources and more than one program (ex: an editor and software synth) can play through the MIA at once.

                  It's worth the extra.....

                    Hi

I had the m audio revolution. I liked it a lot, but couldn't get it to work with the matrox rt.x100. I thought the input trim and the specs were fantastic. Does anyone know a high end card that will work with the rt.x100? My aardvark won't either. Nunchal

ps I have the normal drivers. I've thought about trying the beta, but don't want to jinx my system. Its finally working.

M-Audio released come new Revo drivers a few days ago. They fix quite a bit...

DOC, I agree with you. Didn't realize they were that inexpensive.
