I've tested my Firewire version of the Panasonic 9571.

It's just a Firewire enclosure that houses the same drive.

    WORKS LIKE A CHARM.

    I love it!!

I can hot plug it into either of my workstations for portability.

    Very cool.

I guess it's time to go get one of those enclosures I saw at the computer show last weekend. $39 and you can connect to either IEEE-1394 or USB.

          Driver, no.

An external enclosure box with USB and IEEE-1394 connects for an IDE CD/DVD burner you already have; yes.

We have pretty good computer shows here'bouts.

Still...the Panasonic SW-9571 burner was also a pretty good deal at <$200 USD. I think they're running ~$165 +/- now.

                Hi all,

But does anyone know whether the DVD-RAM drive will read +R and +RW disks?

                I'm guessing it does.

                Any thoughts?

Blooming heck - I honestly thought that a drive with all DVD capabilities would never see the light of day - manufacturers do get entrenched with their technologies, but this one tops the Sony drives.

I wonder how much that drive will cost - I guess we wait until it shows its face.

Now that looks interesting for those interested in +R/RW format capability.

Very, very tempting to wait until it comes out - somewhen in June.

Now that awkward s*d who's bound to send me a +R disk just so I can't read it will be surprised.

I must say the only other thought that crossed my mind was that the review was written on 1st April!

Pioneers next drive, the DVR-A06, is due shortly and also is going to have +R/RW capabilities in addition to the existing -R/RW.

P.S. I have my A04 in an external ADS firewire enclosure. Works perfectly.

The LG info appeared here in February as well. So I guess April 1 was just a coincidence..

Doc, is your SW 9571 an OEM version? I've been trying unsuccessfully to track that one down up here in Canada. In fact Panasonic.ca only lists two on their website. The LF D521U seems to be the closest and at $305 Can its not a bad price either.

Trying to compare specs on these is very difficult.

                                Yes, the SW-9571-CYY is an OEM drive but widely available. Check pricewatch.com, but I got mine here;

                                AVLogic: http://avlogic.com/index.cgi

                                Product page: http://avlogic.com/product.cgi?code=18030019

$152 USD isn't bad, but they don't ship to "foreign addresses". Don't know if that includes Canada or not.
