  • Hitachi GSA-4040B Ends Format War

    "The GSA-4040B can record to DVD-R and DVD+R discs at 4X speed, DVD-RW discs at 2X, DVD+RW at 2.4X, and DVD-RAM at 3X."

"It is also capable of recording to CD-R discs at 24X and CD-RW discs at 16X, according to the manufacturer."

By the way, the Ulead DVD-VR plug-in - in VideoStudio 7 and
MediaStudio Pro 7 - works beautifully with the DVD-RAM drives I've tested.

Except - I doubt it supports the cartridge-enclosed DVD-RAM discs.

Probably only supports the bare DVD-RAM discs.

I just read the thread for the first time.

There's no answer to my question about whether the drive would support cartridge-enclosed DVD-RAM discs.

My observation of the photos suggests it only supports the bare DVD-RAM discs.

          Jerry,

I think you are correct from what I have seen regarding this drive. However .. Is this really a problem as I remember the first CDR drive that I saw a NEC model about 1991 you had to put all CDs into a caddy before you could put them into the drive. . It was a pain. I think if you handle the RAM disks correctly and store correctly they should be OK..

            I actually like the caddies.

            Why?

I don't need to take discs in and out of a plastic jewel case.

I can just slip them in and out of my CD towers.

            Very handy.
