  • Canopus Storm will shutup RT2000?

I heard that it will be much better
than RT2000 cheaper, same chipset but
optimized to max. Any idea? and real real-time transition too,

    Harry

    Hi,
As far as I know, the Storm is vaporware, I couldn't find any info on the Canopus web site, not even a press release, and nothing on the web either.

When or if the Storm is released, the RT2000 would mature even more, making it the best solution for DV/Mpeg-2 real-time editing in the market for the price, just check out MVT 2.0 (the new mega pack)on the Matrox web site and see the improvements and features they've added, simply amazing.
Matrox will continue to support the RT2000 and improve it's feature set, don't forget the RT2000's architexture is expandable, so we'll see all kinds of stuff in the future.

    Regards,
    Elie

It's way way too early to draw any useful comparison between RT2000 and Canopus' Storm.
Canopus has always had a strong reputation for high quality video gear. If/when Storm hits the market, if Canopus does it right, it could be a serious new competitor in the DT video world.

Or it may come to nothing more than a name thrown out there by marketing to test consumer reactions.
www.abcdv.com has a few tantilizing tidbits on the subject. Just enough to make rumors fly.

Here's what i got from that link you gave us
"News about the Canopus DVStorm is still very scarce, and even sometimes wrong. Apparently, the DVStorm will not be based on the C-Cube chipset, contrary to earlier reports. And just in is that Ulead will not suport any RT features of the DVStorm. This leaves Adobe Premiere as the only third party supplier to support the DVStorm. See the reports here."

Is Ulead on DRUGS or what?????
If they don't support the DV500/RT2000/Canopus whatever what the hell will they support then, the cheesey 200$ DV cards sold in Future shop?

That's why I give Adobe credit for going after the market with aggression to support everything out there.
Come on Ulead give us real-time DV/Mpeg-2 with these cards!!

            More info on the Storm here;

            http://www.abcdv.com/editing/canopus/storm/index.html

There is a statement by Mike Downy on the Canopus forum to the effect that it is NOT based on the C-Cube chipset. He is bound by an NDA and cannot elaborate but....

A good board for those who don't
want to change their video card ( and
don't want to stuck with G400 since
                  G800 is coming soon)....

Key points you guys may have missed:

                    1. "DVStorm remains a software solution similar to DVRex-RT. Real-time performance depends on the speed of your processor."

Methinks this thing will need some major CPU horsepower to pull off it's full bag of tricks. Sounds like dualies to me, and that makes any perceived savings on the board itself illusionary.

                    2. The basic price is listed as;

"Suggested retail price in Japan is 168,000 yen or about US$1550. Street prices (Japan) are said to be about 150,000 yen or about US$1380. We estimate a US price of about $1200—give or take a hundred bucks depending on where you shop."

Can you say "dumping"? Such things are illegal in the US.

                    3. it uses a propriatory editing suite, StormEdit. I'd want to see and use this before dumping my pennies.

                    4. The Storm does its compositing in 4:2:2. The RT-2000 uses 4:4:4.

                      Exactly Doc!

There's nothing the Storm can do that the RT2000 can't, the RT2000's feature set will continue to grow, it'll even have support for Premiere 6.0, shortly.

And the price of Storm is outrageous for a software solution

I have to say it: My Canopus DV Raptor board installed without a hitch. And the Canopus DV codec is so good AVID has licensed it for use with the AVID Xpress DV software.

I have a lot of respect for Matrox and the RT2000 and Doc makes a good point about the 4:4:4 compositing strength.

However, Canopus enjoys a marvelous reputation for putting out products that install very easily and work without major bugs.

This has been true of Canopus DV Raptor, Canopus DV RexRT, and even the consumer-level Canopus EZDV.

I believe the STORM will be an incredible product.

As for Ulead - they did go to work on RT functionality for both DV500 and RT2000, but that was back around June and there's still no word on whether they've made any progress without active support of hardware manufacturers.

The problem isn't Ulead. The problem is hardware manufacturers DO NOT WANT SOFTWARE COMPETITION because it makes their lives more complicated. Hence, they have defaulted to Adobe Systems purely because Adobe enjoys a market share advantage - being the third largest software company in the U.S.

If the hardware manufacturers had their choice, there would be only ONE software company to deal with.

Canopus has really been disappointing where Ulead is concerned. First, they bundle with MediaStudio Pro (both the Rex and the Raptor). Then, they pull the rug out from under us by bundling with Adobe. Then, they build capture plug-ins for Premiere and ignore MediaStudio.

But the new STORM software is said to have functionality that rivals either Premiere or MediaStudio Pro. We'll see.

Harry, that's because MVT 2.0 IS STILL BETA

And to let you know, al lot of people have major success runing 2.0 as well, so we'll see once the final release is out.

Jerrold, nice to here from you, Don't you think Adobe is a bit more agrressive though when it comes to marketing even though Ulead's products may perform better?

                            Cheers guys, Happy Halloween!
