  • DVD-RAM and NTBackup on XP

    Hi all,

Now I know that some of you out there use DVD-RAM drives... and I guess that someone may well be able to answer my question...

When using NTBackup, I point it at the DVD-RAM drive, and press go - however, when the disk has filled, it stops with an error - why does it not ask for another disk?

Anyone know a way to 'prod' XP into asking for another disk.

I guess it's to do with the fact that it's not listed as a removable disk but as a DVD drive (clearly not removable then! )

    Thanks all,

    Taliska

True, but I need to know about NTBackup.

On my Win2000 machine the drive is listed twice: Once as a DVD (Rom) drive, and again (Ram) as a removeable disk.

Did you load the drivers for the DVD-RAM aspect of your drive?

And why would you want to use NTbackup? I find the "Drag and Drop" ease of use, not to mention the ability to see what's on my backups right from Explorer are one of the reasons I specifically went with a drive that allowed the use of DVD-Ram.

          Hi,

On mine (XP), the Drive is listed only once and is either a DVD-RAM drive or CD depending on what's in the drive.

The Panasonic drivers are loaded and working.

It's not I that needs to know - drag-and-drop copying files is not a substitute for backing up the operating system - what happens when you're trying to backup 15 Gb in one go... Where's the media management with drag-and-drop?

For me personally, I like drag-and-drop copy and that suits me fine.

In my case I partition out my drives with C: containing the OS (W2k) and my basic (Anti-Virus, etc.) programs. This allows me to Ghost the OS onto a single DVD that is self booting and easy to reinstall the OS with.

The rest of my program drives are limited to 4.25 gigs each to make drag and drop of that drive(s) onto a DVD-RAM disc easy. In this manner I can easily restore my OS, or any of my drives with relative ease.
