  • Duron or T-Bird?

Can anyone advise me please -
Which would render AVI to MPG1 quickest
if both fitted with 256Mb PC100 ram
    and DMA66 HD.
    750mhz Duron or 750mhz Thunderbird?

I am not worried about multi tasking speed or anything else.

    Many thanks - Biker

There really won’t be much difference between the two. Since the .avi to encode is extremely large (relative to cache size), the L2 size difference doesn’t do much. If all you’re worried about is encoding speed, then the Duron is just as good as a T-Bird.

      Biker,
as I understand it there would be little difference in rendering time between these two CPUs. Due to the fact that video rendering would effectively swamp the cache memory of these processors, the larger L2 cache on the Thunderbird becomes fairly irrelevant. Much more important in this case is raw processing power (ie. more MHz) and good FPU performance. Perhaps think about going for an 800MHz Duron instead. Toms Hardware recently put up an article about DivX (aka MPEG4) encoding and compared different types of processor, could be worth a look. http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/00q3/000925/index.html

There would be a difference if you're planning on any full-frame MPEG-2 captures. You would need something north of 800mhz for this and Durons only come in speeds up to 800mhz.

Thanks all of you, tomshardware had some interesting things to say on it. Overclocking sounds interesting, but is it false economy?
