The Hitachi/LG 4040 that Jerry found for $235 claims 3X DVD-RAM along with DVD+/- support which would seem a better deal overall. It too comes with the B's software. I've never used any of it, is the B's stuff any good or is it throwaway crap?
I'd order a 4040 now if I knew Nero 5.5 supported it.

Actually, I believe I would choose the new Panasonic LF-M621 drive that Doc has found, assuming they continue the tradition of 'DEEP DISH TRAYS' that allow for the acceptance of cartridge-enclosed DVD-RAM discs.
The Hitachi GSA-4040B does not support cartridge-enclosed DVD-RAM discs.

Exactly. The LF-M621 allows the use of either caddied or caddyless DVD-RAM, which is a good feature to have....especially if you want to use if both for archiving and video.

This is great news! I have been looking to pick up another drive for my office machine to facilitate large transfers to and from home.
Rather than pick up another LFD-311 on the cheap I will wait for the arrival of this new drive.
Caddies, must have caddies.

The only possible use I could have for DVD-RAM is if I bought an Panasonic DVD-RAM stand alone recorder like the E30 -- which it seems doesn't use caddies (or doesn't need them).
Since the LF-M621 drive doesn't support DVD+R/RW there is no chance of me buying or recommending it.
DVD+RW blanks can be had for ~$15/10 which would be fine for sitting on a shelf for "backup" if 4.7GB was a useful capacity for me, which it isn't. I use DVD+RW for stuff I've downloaded that needs to be installed on a non-networked computer, and to carry some mp3 songs to the different computers I work on, beyond this its basically pretty useless.

I am curious what backup methods you are using? If you can find an easier/faster way than the method I use with the Panny drive I would be interested in hearing about it.

While the DVD-RAM doesn't work for the ghosted image it does allow me to back up the other logical drives I create for my system. Provided I keep them limited to 4.25 gigs.
