  • Pioneer DVR 104 problem

Out of the blue the damned thing has stopped seeing my blank CD-Rs (any brand). It WILL see and record to previously recorded multisession CD-Rs, and it WILL see and record to blank DVD-Rs. But it will not see blank CD-Rs!

Anyone else have this problem? Suggestions?

(Pioneer is about as helpful as a turkey in a rainstorm!)

What operating system are you using?

Win 98 SE. It appears now to have been a false alarm. I reinstalled Nero and it seems to have come back. Still testing. The question I'm now concerned with is, what made it drop out so suddenly in the first place?

It may be related to the fact that I've gotten more crashes and BSODs with 98SE than I ever did with 98FE. I'm working on cleaning up my system and clearing space so I can repartition and set up a dual-boot with either WinXP or Win2K. Then I might roll back to Win98FE on that partition. THEN we should se some fireworks!

I'd set up an editing partition with either Win2K or WinXP on it then leave the normal stuff on the other one. That's the only real way to keep things stable.

I will say this positive about WinXP though: its support for DVD burners is much better than even Win2K's. Either blows any version of Win9x/ME out of the water.

Exactly how is XP's support of DVD burners "much better" than what's in W2K?

I've used 3 different DVD burners on W2k without any problems.

Because instead of the "real" drive and a virtual drive you get just one drive and the XP drivers work better IMO.

This must be a DVDRAM or "packet writing" thing. I've never tried the DVD+RW packet writing seeing how buggy it is for CD-RW.

DVD-RAM packet writing is anything but buggy

BTW: did you know that 11 of the 13 Panasonic DVD decks on their website now read both DVD-R and DVD-RAM?

IF you review the specs it looks like they're dropping official DVD-RW upport in favor of DVD-RAM, which dovetails with the specs of their DVD recorders and is a better rewritable format anyhow.
