  • need driver for IEEE 1394 card

    Greets,

Just got a FireWire card for FREE(!) but its a VIA Fire II (VT6306) jobbie and it isn't happy with the drivers I fed it from my Win98SE CD. Can't find any IEEE 1394 drivers on the Microsoft website either. Can anyone help?

Though I'm currently using Win98SE I'm going to try a dual-boot setup soon with Win2k. The reason I got this card free was because the previous owner said it wouldn't work in Win2k! That doesn't sound right to me.

    Thanks.

    Hi Frank,

you should contact VIA about this issue since they say

    Compatibility
Universal plug-and-play capability allows devices to be attached or removed from the system, even with the power on. No device driver installation necessary as full software driver support is included in Windows® 98 SE and Windows® 2000.

You may have paid too much for it. Early Via 1394 controllers definitely didn't work right. Newer ones seem to be OK. Problem is I know of no way to ID good Via 1394 chips from bad short of trying them :-(

The better option is to avoid VIA chipped IEEE-1394 cards entirely. I'd stick to those with TI or Agere (Lucent) chipsets.

          Thanks lads,

          @ Maggi:
I read that too at the VIA website but I don't think there's much Microsoft can do about this issue. With this OHCI stuff I think the onus is on the peripheral maker to comply with the spec.

          @ the others:
Thanks, I've read in numerous posts of yours that VIA FireWire sux and TI is the way to go but when one came my way for nothing I thought it might be worth a shot. I'll try it in Win2k and if that fails I'll just give up.
