  • Tape for Japan

I have a veterinary diagnostic video tape (Pal) that I have taken the original audo away from and inserted a Japanese translation.

    No problems here.

Due to LOFT (lack of flaming training) I am at a loss to determine what format I need for Japan and how to convert for their system if necessary.

A few pointers will get me started if there is anyone who has experience in this.

    Thanks in advance

    Same as American NTSC

To flesh that out a little - need more coffee - from memory its NTSC 4.43 (Doc will probably correct me on this). If it runs in NTSC mode on your vcr, you've probably converted it correctly.

Which software are you planning on using?

Sorry Don't know Premiere 6.5, (I use MSP) assuming you have encoding profiles for NTSC and PAL. Pick the most comfortable profile (DV, MPEG whatever your working in) with an NTSC format and export/create/encode.

I'm sure one of the other guys here could tell you the exact template to use. (I'd drag up the exact screen res etc to tell you but I just re-installed the OS and I don't have MSP in yet)

Just be aware that from Pal->NTSC you will loose some quality as our good Old PAL (Adelaidian I am is 25fps and NTSC is 29.97 (or so). also the vertical resolution is less.

So don't knock your self silly trying to get it 110% perferct.

NTSC 4.43 is also known as NTSC-J. NTSC-J is a "PAL-type" NTSC in that it uses the same 4.43 mhz color subcarrier frequency as PAL.

NTSC 3.58 is also known as NTSC-M and is used in the US, Canada and other NTSC countries with a 3.58 mhz subcarrier.

NTSC-J looks slightly better than ordinary NTSC because it has a better signal/noise ratio, which is due to its higher bandwidth.

I will have a fiddle with export/create/encode in NTSC-J, is that so?

                    Sasq;

If he sets his RT.X's Project Settings/General/Advanced to export his NTSC using IRE0 instead of IRE7.5 wouldn't that account for the extra bandwidth? PAL use IRE0.

Good question, Sadly I'm not sure of the answer. Last conversion I did, I just used the predefined NTSC-DV1 settings to convert the DV in MSP.

While we use NTSC-J, I've not had any trouble using -M settings. (except of course loss of colour quality).

                          I'd say yes.

Some nice stuff in there including using the RT.X's analog/S-video output to export to tape/TV files played by DirectShow enabled software. This goes for WMP, MSPro etc.

I have to yet take a video to DVD. I guess the same principles apply as for tape, that is they have to be in a particular country's format. In any case I may be better advised to create DVDs.

I don't know why the NTSC-M settings wouldn't work, especially if it were set to IRE0 to preserve superblack. It's not like NTSC-M's 3.58mhz bandwidth wouldn't fit into NTSC-J's 4.43mhz scheme of things.

It's likely that going the other way (NTSC-J to NTSC-M) could cause problems though.
