  • Migrating project from Marvel G200-TV to Pinnacle DC-30

Well, I got kind of sick of waiting for decent 3D and OpenGL performance out of my Marvel G200, so I have dumped it in favor of a new Pinnacle Miro DC-30 Pro and a G400 DH that I got second hand. The problem is that I have one project already cut together in Media Studio Pro 6 that I have not yet mastered to tape. Can I reinstall MSPro 6 when the upgrade is complete and rerender the project out so I can print it to tape?
Also does anyone know if there will be a problem with leaving my current Sound Blaster Live Value card in the system with the DC-30 or would the audio from the DC-30 be good enough for everyday use as well?
    My recently upgraded system is:
    Celeron 566@850
    Abit BE6-II rev 1.1
    256 MB CAS2 PC100 DIMMs
    Matrox G400 32MB DH oem
    Sound Blaster Live Value
    Adaptec 2940U2W
    Windows 98
    Drives
    Primary Master-Maxtor 5.9 GB UDMA/33
    Secondary Master-Hitachi GD-2500 DVD-ROM
    Secondary Slave-Generic LS-120 Drive
    Highpoint ATA66 Primary Master-Maxtor 30GB 7200rpm (Video Drive)
    SCSI drives:
    Micropolis 4345SS SCA-80 4.55GB drive
    Seagate ST39103LW 9.1 GB drive
    Yamaha CRW6416SZ CD-RW Drive

I just want this upgrade to procede as easily as possible. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

No answer? Not because I slighted the G200 is it? I did move up to a G400.

No, I think like I did, most people who've dumped the Marvel have jumped straight into DV. I converted my in progress MJPEG project from MJPEG to DV in MSP6 and finished it there. The transition is easy now, but when I did it mack in March w2k and MSP wasn't working quite right :-(

Unfortunately moving up to DV is not an option for me right now, as all my cameras are analog (2xold VHS and a Hi8). I know I could move up to a sony Digital 8 camcorder, but that just doesn't seem like it is worth doing for the few projects I have in Hi8 format.
What it comes down to is this, I got the DC30 for next to nothing and I am using it as an alternative until I have enough saved up for a new camera (looking at a GL-1) and capture card (probably a DV500, as I want to run Windows NT or 2000 and I do not want to be tied to the VGA card in the RT2000 like I was with the Marvel).
I guess my best get here is just to try it out and see what happens, right? Oh well, I guess I'll take the holiday weekend coming up to do the install. wish me luck!

As long as your new improved DV camcorder had analog in you can "capture" your VHS and Hi8 clips by recording them to DV and downloading them over firewire to your editing software.

Analog In --> DV tape --> computer via firewire will be as good or better than the analog captures from your Marvel. The DC30 is in theory capable of 6+ MB/s MJPEG captures which should be a bit better than DV at its fixed 3.6 MB/s but in practice it certainly is a lot more hassle and you still end up with files in a non-portable hardware dependent codec. DV is standard hardware and software. No way will you see the difference from VHS originals, Hi8 perhaps if you know exactly what to look for.

I am aware of this, wkulecz. The problem is I'd like to get this edited already and out of my hair. Since I already have the DC30 I might as well use it, right? I mean the way things are going I won't be able to afford the DV hardware I want for a while. By that time it'll probably all be obsolete anyway. Well at least I'll be able to buy it on clearance.
In the meantime, any other advice? I've got 48 hours until the holiday weekend, so i'd appreciated whatever I can get before it's too late.

              Hi NotEd,

The main problem that you have is that the footage you have already captured will (presumably) have been compressed with Matrox own hardware MJPEG codec which will have to be removed before installing the DC30. Personally I'd go for a complete format and reinstall of the OS before trying to install the DC30.

The only thing that I can think of is installing a 3rd party software MJPEG codec and changing the clip headers to match - full info on doing this is contained in the "Idiots Guides" section of the main site (www.desktopvideoworld.com), but it is not up to date, so the position regarding soft codecs may have changed.

Otherwise you'll have to print the project out to tape using the Marvel before installing the DC30.

              Cheers

              Chris
