I thought it interesting to note that Videomaker magazine noted that the amount of RAM had no influence on their speed test, only the speed the RAM was running, i.e. 266MHz, 333MHz, etc...

This is what I've been saying (or the benchmark results that is) for years. As long as the OS isn't starved for memory, or you aren't doing a lot of multitasking, more memory doesn't increase rendering speed.

Also of note was the extremely positive review.

Exactly.

But too many individuals are not using enough RAM.

And so their OS *is* starved for memory.

And they do a lot of multitasking - and so they *do* suffer render speed degradation.

The disagreement revolves around how much RAM is enough.

In my view - 512mb just doesn't cut it anymore.

I run 1gb in two Windows 2000 workstations and only 512 mb in my laptop and I can 'feel' the performance difference.

RAM beyond a certain minimum should have no effect on rendering speed which is CPU bound.

Interactive editing with lots of buffered (memory mapped) files and transitions should benefit by more RAM in proportion to the complexity of the project.

As should realtime playback, which involves a lot of buffering.
