windvd2000 freezing after opening...

i'm using windvd 2000 under win2k with a matrox G400DH card. it seems that if i put a dvd in the drive and then open windvd, it freezes up, but if i open windvd first and then put a dvd in, it plays fine, or vice versa. i didn't have much time to try to troubleshoot this issue yet, and i'm not even sure if there is a pattern to the freezing, but has anyone come across this before? does it maybe have to do with auto-insert notification or something like that? any workaround or fix that anyone might know of?
