Actually, I don't prefer external devices, but sometimes they provide the best solution. Still, the Lacie route is just a thought to have a lot of storage. As it uses 2 normal IDE harddisks, I might as well go for the (cheaper) harddisk-route (I still have a free IDE-channel); WDC has 250 GB disks.
bubu: some mainboards even have problems with their IDE devices. We have some at work here that don't allow the IDE-channel to be fully used; this becomes noticable when setting up a RAID0 (in Linux). Throughput of 1 drive is fine, but the throughput of the raid is not even 25% higher. On other similar configurations, the throughput of the RAID shows a much bigger difference (80-90% if I'm not mistaken). Don't remember which chipset was on it, but we got rid of them...
. So even the average user *should* have to select his hardware wisely...
