They have now built a disc recorder system made up of 16 HDTV recorder units with a capacity of about 3.5 terabytes, allowing them to shoot 18 minutes of UHDV footage.
      OY!!!!
Gigabytes is now a thing of the past... bring on the terabyte drives!

HDTV as a commercial gimmick only. The true HDTV that the CCIR are aiming for as an international standard (which the Japanese consortium specs are not), will have about 1920 horizontal pixels and 1080 vertical. I believe the BBC have been taping all their high-quality programmes in this format for 2 or 3 years now, so that they have a stock of canned stuff for when the system can be switched on.

OK, it seems that this experimental system is twice this again, but is it a practical reality? I'd like a 4-CCD 2.5" camcorder!!!!!

The footage was then shown to members of the public on a 4x7m wide-angle screen provoking, according to Mitani, gasps of astonishment. Some viewers even experienced nausea because of the ultra realistic visual effect of speed without the usual physical sensation of movement.

Mitani said the system was still at a basic stage of development, but he claimed it had proved that image qualities so realistic that they approximated to actually being at the recorded event were possible.
Weren't quotes like this common when motion pictures were first shown a hundred years ago, or so.

Seriously, though, I wonder how this compares to film technology like IMAX (which I've also found can sometimes induce nausea).

Eventually we'll get to a point where people demand such a realistic viewing experience that they'll have live actors perform in front of them! Wow, that would be amazing if that could be pulled off somehow... maybe it could be done in some half circular area with seats for people and a center performance spot

@ arciervo - Have you ever been to an OmniMAX? It's an actual dome around you, larger than an IMAX! The beginning sequence they go through one of those psychedlic wormhole things and some people get motion sickness.

Actually the local theatre (at the Canadian Museum of Civilization) can be configured as either regular (flat) IMAX or IMAX Dome (OMNIMAX). I've watched films (and felt queasy) in both formats.

I haven't yet had the privilege of experiencing nausea while watching a film in IMAX 3D.
