  • Question: PAL60 and NTSC

how many TV's are out there that do NOT support NTSC, but DO support PAL60? Am I right that it is practically 0%, since PAL60 is almost the same as NTSC?

This question is of importance, because I previously thought (and many other Matroxusers too) that PAL60 was a big deal for us Europeans when watching NTSC material on a PAL tv. However, if I am right on the above supposition, then it isn't much of a big deal, apart from not having to switch the display mode every time you want to see both PAL and NTSC video after another (or the other way round).

It is important. Almost all newer televisions are capable of PAL60, but only the expensive ones can do NTSC.

NTSC and PAL differ greatly in the way they
    handle color.
On the other hand PAL and PAL60 are exactly the same except for the higher frequency.

My TV which is almost 8 years old can display NTSC but only in black & white due to the difference in color encoding. That means it would have no problem whith PAL60 at all. As my TV is old and was not a very expensive one, i would think that almost all
TVs that are currently used in germany are capable of PAL60 while those that can display NTSC are probably < 10%.

The second point is that PAL has a higher resolution than NTSC so that PAL60 woul look better than NTSC even if the TV could display ist.

As far as your TV set is capable displaying 60Hz, it is PAL60 compatible. Besides, if your TV has RGB input (via SCART), you can make a VGA->RGB cable, and PAL or NTSC doesn't matter anymore... as long as your TV supports 60Hz...
