  • Cornal mass ejection headed for Earth....

    in other words a huge solar flare measuring G3 on the NOAA scale, which is catagorized as "Strong";

    Power systems: possible widespread voltage control problems and some protective systems will mistakenly trip out key assets from the grid.

    Spacecraft operations: may experience surface charging and tracking problems, corrections may be needed for orientation problems.

    Other systems: induced pipeline currents affect preventive measures, HF radio propagation sporadic, satellite navigation degraded for hours, low-frequency radio navigation disrupted, and aurora has been seen as low as Alabama and northern California (typically 45° geomagnetic lat.)**.

    G5 is the highest and labeled "Extreme".

    It's expected to hit Earth at 3:00 am EDT in the US with the effects lasting from 12-18 hours.

              Spaceweather now says another one is on the way with a strength of 5 but will be a glancing blow.

              Quite a solar-max we have going here

                SOHO has been recording CME's occuring every ~8 hours.

                Doesn't anone remember the 2000 event that caused communication/power grid failures in Canada? Also the other in '89

                Doc you're in a prime location, pray for clear skies

                how about some sunspot pics from your equipment?

                      We had a rather nice aurora last night from the G3 and some cable channels were in and out all day. I've also noted that our cordless phone has trouble connecting to its base and that our cellulars are having a bit of trouble.

                      Tonight should show a better aurora depending on how much of a glancing blow we get from that G5.

                        Not explode.....but remember that our sun is a cyclical flare star that can go thorugh bouts of high activity much stronger than this.
