Virtual Dub 1.4c & Compression

I'm following <a href="http://www.vcdhelper.com/mjpeg.htm">these</a>
instructions on capturing an AVI with Virtual Dub & Huffyuv codec.
Everything seems to be going fine until I reach the point where I have to select
the video compression, as shown here:</p>

Problem is that all I see in the menu is :</p>

I'm rather new to video editing, so if someone could shed some light on what

Since I can't see the picture, I am not sure about your problem. But I am sure you can use Virtual Dub to convert mjpeg to other format, as this is what I always do...

If you can watch the video in Virtual Dub, just select a compression type. If you can't watch it, you may have to install a software mjpeg decoder like PicVideo2 or the one from Mainactor. After that you should be able to watch the movie and convert it as you like...

I'm told that we need to find an MPEG-1 codec and install it. It should then appear in the list of options of codecs in VirtualDub. This would make VirtualDub an extremely versatile and powerful editor. I'm in the process of looking for the codec, I'm told it exists. Maybe Micro$oft has one, but I couldn't see it at first glance on their website. Anyone out there know of it's whereabouts?

Isochar : Yes .. U are do wrong .. U must go to Source and Setup RGB or apply YUV2 patch for YUV .. Do not use MJPEG !

As for the YUV 2, I found it under the custom video format tab. However, when I select it, the program crashes.

Is there another program that does a similar task?

Hi Isochar,

I'm working on a similar problem right here. First, download Flying Dutchman's YUY hack for the Matrox VideoTools available right here at www.Desktopvideoworld.com (follow the "downloads" section and find the hack near the bottom). Follow the instructions carefully, making sure you do the appropriate backups. This hack will allow you to capture in YUY2 direct from the Marvel using a 3rd party capture util such as AV_IO, VirtualDub, etc.

You'll need a compressor, since raw video is going to fill your HD PDQ. Most folks around here use HuffYuv, available fromhttp://www.math.berkeley.edu/~benrg/huffyuv.html#Capturing.

Now you have footage ready for editing, filtering or whatever. Now I haven't got further than this, so we'll have to rely on the experts to help out from here on.

I noticed that you have a lot of walk-throughs...
you wouldn't happen to have one on using my RRG to convert VHS to DivX ;-) ? (That's what I'm trying to do here)

Isn't DivX a better quality codec than Mpeg-2; and if so...how do I use virtual dub to create a divx rip of my DVD?

What do you mean not usable?

Its Matrox and ATI that can't produce usable w2k drivers. The lowly $50 Hauppauge WinTV Go has stable w2k drivers that work fine with AVI_IO.

This is sad... all I want to do is archive VHS tapes in Win2k. If Matrox hasn't released drivers that can do this (they've had since February), I really doubt they ever will.

Can anyone recommend something other than selling off my $150 RRG to buy a Hauppage?

That is the exact reason why I am still running 98 SE2 still. I still have yet to see a positive to going with 2000 or ME with Matrox. I figure I can give up a little of the "improvements" in my OS if my system can still fully function. I have a G400 and everything I do to my system is dependent on this card. I consider the digital video aspect as the central theme to my computer and if it is not going to work, then I bite the bullet and stay with what I have.

I am not saying that you shouldn't be able to upgrade, but there are consequences. We do know that the G400 was designed to work on the most current OS at the time (Win98), there might be something in 2000 that Matrox can't overcome. I personally don't think that is the case. I think it is more of a "we don't feel like spending any more money in developing drivers for an older card, buy our new G450, we guarantee that one will work." So what can you do?
