  • Can't achieve 29fps on T-Bird 1ghz w/ ATA-100 Drive :(

I tried HuffyYUV today with my new Athlon T-Bird 1ghz w/ 256mb of pc133 ram and a brand new 45gb ATA-100 drive.. Unfortunatly it's not capturing a stable 29fps with 704x480. The frame rate meter in VirtualDub says its getting about 27fps, not that great considering i used to get 24fps with my old Celeron 433. The CPU usage is about 90%. Sometimes it would just capture for a few seconds and then notice that the status numbers to the right have stopped moving.. So I just reinitiate the capture.. A few times it blue screened too. If i set HuffyYUV to the fast settings its a little better but too many frames are still dropped. 352x480 is no problem at all, but i could get that on my old celeron 433 also. There must be something wrong but I don't know exactly. I noticed that my drives are listed weird under the control panel in system devices.. They don't have the DMA checkbox in them, but I do have them enabled in the Highpoint BIOS (DMA settings for drives i mean, im not exactly sure if its affecting windows or not).

    These are my cache settings:

I'm pretty sure VirtualDub overrides one of the settings on here, it had a panel where you could set the buffer for something.

The current motherboard im using now is an Abit KT7-RAID, I had the board and everything installed by a shop, im not exactly sure if they installed the VIA 4-in-1 drivers, but im sure the CD the board came with had them, I don't know if they're updated or not. If anyone knows how to find out if they are installed please let me know. Cause i've heard the 4-in-1 drivers come with a Bus Mastering driver that increases performance.

Another problem i'm having.. On my old Abit BH6 board, whenever I booted into windows my Line-In started buzzing an annoying sound into my speakers, it would continue until I muted it or initiated capture mode and then exited. Now with my new KT7, nothing comes in through the Line-In, but all my regular sounds are messed up.. Like playing an MP3 will sound very weird or anything that uses sound. The distortions go away when I initiate the capture mode, weird. Nothing is sharing an IRQ with the sound card, as for the Marvel G400, only a few things like the SCSI card are being shared with it.

Sorry, but I've never had good luck with Highpoint products.

I've had no problem doing full frame HuffYUV with a Marvel G400, video tools 1.52, PIII/600 on a single Maxtor DMax Plus40 drive on an ATA66 controller. But then I also use AVI_IO. I find it better overall than VirtualDUB for captures.

Pretty weird... I didn't think there would be much difference, but I tried out the trial version of AVI_IO and not a single frame was dropped...

I would still appreciate it if someone could answer the other questions I have in this post though. Or if anyone else is able to get 29fps in VDub at full res.

I did do a clean install of Windows 98 SE when I put everything together, the old OS (was 98 SE also) would blue screen when shutting down the system, I tried the MS shutdown fix but it didnt help. After I did a fresh install everything was ok. I guess AVI IO is worth the money.

That it is. And being a small proggie with limited need for resources does have its advantages....

I do have a couple of other thoughts on this; has anyone having this problem thought to increase the number of buffers used by VirtualDUB? It's in the Capture/Disk I_O menu with a default buffer size of 512k and 2 buffers. Also in this window the Windows write buffer is disabled.

Changing these may affect the capture performance.

I absolutely love V-Dub, but I have never been able to successfully capture full rez with it using Huff. AVI IO is definitely the way to go, I believe that V-Dub, being a multifaceted app, takes up more resources or something. It may poll the system for something during a capture and cause dropped frames. Now granted I am not in the 1GHz range, but I do have a PIII 700 and 256M of RAM and a Fasttrak 66 in striped mode. For just capturing (especially to other codecs) AVI IO is the only way to go.

What operating system are you using? You never specified. Also did you change operating systems when you chaned machines. I'm just wondering if that might have anything to do with it.

I'm easily getting 25fps with VirtualDub in full PAL resolution when using HuffYUV (yes, that's only 25fps, but PAL nevertheless has a bit higher total bandwidth requirement than NTSC with 30fps) with the ABIT KT-7 RAID and a Duron800@1026, and this in Win2k. CPU usage is roughly 60-90%, when using the PicVideo MJPEG codec with high quality settings, CPU usage is about 60-80%.

But then I have a Hauppauge, so maybe the Marvel just doesn't like VIA chipsets or the Highpoint, or....
