  • YUY2 under W2k - which card???

    Hi guys
Since software codecs became more usual my RRG becomes more obsolete because the so expected videotools with yuy2 suport don't come out. I just quit, I want yuy2 support and heard about hauppage wintv. Would like your help to let me make a good choice.
    My system:
    - Dual PIII 500 100mhz slot I
    - Gigabyte GA-6BXD board
    - 256 mb ram
    - Tekram DC390 U2W with 2 9.1 scsi hds
    - G400 16 mb dh
    - RRG(in it's last days here...)
    - SBlive value
    What I want to do:
    - capture under win2k
    - take advantage of both my processors
    - capture with yuy2/divx with no cpu restrictions
    Questions:
    - Is all this possible?
    - With which capture card?
    P.S.: suggestion - hauppage wintv?

    thank you all

IF the discussion is about cards that are in the distribution channel NOW then I'd be looking at the new Hauppage WinTV PVR. I haven't seen one (who has?) but it sure has one helluva specs sheet.

125 channel TV tuner, FM radio, hardware MPEG-2 (VisionTech's Kfir chip), presumably YUV captures (all the other WinTV's do 'em), PHYSICAL infra-red remote control (!) etc. etc.

$249 USD list, but http://www.microwarehouse.com is offering a $50 rebate on 'em.

    WinTV-PVR: http://www.hauppauge.com/html/wintvpvr_datasheet.htm

I have one on order, I'll let you know (seems it's a long backorder list)

But I have seen already problems about sync issues when recording from the video inputs. The card uses the soundcard for audiograbbing, like the Marvel, and seems it's not working well.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I won't go for the latest card, there isn't yet support for w2k and the wintv-pci seems enough, I won't use almost any of the bundled software, just want the capture driver to work with MSP or Virtualdub. There's only one thing that confuses me, the specs say that the max capture res(or avi clip capture) is 320x240 but at other place on their site it tells "Image capture formats supported: Square pixel PAL(768x576)"... and now, what's the max capture size I can get? Although I never capture full size, 320x240 is less than ciff(352x288), my favourite format. One other thing that worries me is if their capture driver is smp enabled, otherwise I'll get stuck again with 352x288 and divx, with drop frames for not enough cpu power... Well, thanks again folks, I think I'll give Hauppage a try.

Jkun: I have a WinTV with Radio and remote, and it works like a dream under W2k (except for a driver quirk that won't allow me to change channels from the video source dialog). It captures YUY2 up to 640x480 (I'm in NTSC territory) and works fine with VirtualDub and/or AVI_IO or whatever. On my dual Celeron 510 rig, I can capture HuffYUV at full resolution without a single problem.

I know there's been a lot of talk about YUY2 and YUV capturing here, but I'm still fuzzy about the file sizes for these formats. What is the capture sizes for the max res. of the WinTV PCI cards (640x480 is it?) ? Also how workable YUY/YUV formats are with say Premiere in Win2k?

Another thing, does anyone know if any of the Geforce cards have good TV-out? I'm still thinking about replacing my Marvel G400, but don't have the CPU power for software MPEG-2 and want really good TV-out. Thanks in advance.
