Sony G520 - Good Deal ??

As much as crt monitors have fallen in price, that still seems like a good value to me given the value/reputation of sony's larger displays.
x-caliber:
did you see my update? the verax won't arrive for a week or 2...P4b@2.7, AOpen ax4spe max II, 4X Parhelia 128 with Zalman zm80c and fan -or- ATI Radeon X800GTO, 1024mb.

I would say it's not that good a deal because its reconditioned.
You only get a 1 yr warranty with it. With a reconditioned anything you just never know how long it was used before it was reconditioned and why they had to recondition it in the first place.
Maybe it was in a flood, who really knows???
If it were new then it would be good deal.
Monitors are on the cheap these days, and with the holidays approaching you should be able to find some good buys on a new one.

Ray,
From the perspective of an EE which would you rather own, a fresh off the factory floor model (unknown if it works/ not exposed to potential infantile death) or one that's been gone through with a fine tooth comb and tested to meet the specs?"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." -- Dr. Seuss

I have now purchased 5.
only one has died and lasted 6yrs... used heavily. [3yrs past warranty] 1997~2003 RIP
Two of the five are brand new and work flawlessly.
1 of the five was sold off with another computer.
1 of the five was trashed, because it was small and monochrome, but it still worked.
They could go through them with a fine tooth comb, that's all in great, but in most cases they are stil warrantied only for one year.
Whereas, the monitors I purchased came with a three year parts and labor warranty
Maybe you will be lucky.... at least there are no moving parts, but plenty of them could get fried or something.
I like show room new. Warranties are longer and I feel confident to know somebody didn't drop coffee down the back of it, etc.
Like I said if it was/ is new It's a good deal, otherwise no.
Like new one's aren't tested??? hahaha good one.

Ray, Usually only a small percentage of monitors (or anything that rolls off a mass production line are tested (and/or tested fully) it costs to much to give each unit a full test.Juu nin to iro

Mine are in mint/flawless condition and on 24/7 for years. Typically used 18hours a day and I don't turn them off.
I would suppose you've over 20 years experience using computers, specifically Graphics in mind... what I thought. NOT!
Of all the massive amounts of experience you've garnered how many have you had replaced for free by the OEM's Engineering Manager? Even tho it was reconditioned and out of warranty?! Ziltch on two counts!
Dan, aka Sasq is correct, They sample very few, typically only 1 out of 1000 or more. So as Clint would say, Feelin lucky punk?!
And for everyone you buy at premium I can purchase 3-4 of mine and without return shipping fee assessed. Stick that where your warranty don't shine.
I presume your above reaction is pompusly based on most anyone posting in forums must be a punk kiddy or do you behave like this always when responding? What I thought and Oh how you are wrong BOY! Yes I use colorful verbage to describe what I'm feeling and or to emphisize a point I will drive right through most anyone's head.
Matter of fact Haig, I presume you know who he is, thanked me for the link to this monitor... he's in the market, we talk alot via ICQ. Mutual respect for one another from the days when we had a Matrox beta test team. I was one of the select few BBz. Let alone Moderator of General Hardware/Software for three years. Or have you forgotten? Youth generally do have short memories/lack of respect for their elders and or peers in general. Sorry I'm not from the Nintendo/MTV/Jerry Springer generation.
Sadly you took what I had pointed out personally instead of facing facts or even remotely considered them. Your bad. But don't let that stop you from continuing to make an arse of yourself here. I'm rather enjoying it. In a silly sadistic kinda way, like when a driver has a deer caught in his headlights.
If on the otherhand you would prefer to carry this conversation in another thread, I would gladly be willing to discuss the Pro's&Con's of New vs Factory refurbished at lengthLast edited by Greebe; 22 November 2003, 01:06."Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." -- Dr. Seuss

Greebe,
Well it's your opinion that refurbs are better... more power to ya. At least all the monitors I trash won't be in a land-fill. So thanks to that!
I was giving my opinion if you don't like it you don't have to read it.
And I am not some punky kid, nice try but I think you should check your refurbed crystal ball because it ain't working.
And Sasq, you sound as though you have watched the come off the assembly line. Please give me a break. They test them... are you kidding? One bad part and have 50,000 come back. I have worked in an assembly line plant before so I know what goes on in there. [It wasn't monitors tho? hehehe, righty tighty lefty lucy!]
Greebe if your opinion is refurb monitors are better good for you I really could care less either way. I would rather pay a premium than pay for someone else's junk. All you get is 1 year... 12months go by rather quickly if you ask me. Mine is 3 yrs... tick, tick, tick.
Who wins... the world may never know.
PS... I buy new cars too. I am not a junk dealer, if that offends you Greebe to bad, it's my opinion whether you like it or not. It wasn't my intention to fight you although it would unlikely be a fair fight sounds like your depends are a little too tight.

Congratulations Ray, you have worked in an assembly line plant before, so have I.
Yes parts get tested, however it depends on the level of testing you are talking about.
If your talking about automated tests as boards go past a certain point then yes. are you talking about 1 monitor in 50 or 100 being plugged in to see if the light comes on, yes that is testing. Full spec tests are only performed at most on 1 in 100 units, it isn't cost effective otherwise.Juu nin to iro

I am sure there are a few that could fall through the cracks, I have bought many and have never had one fail prematurely, so it's very rare.
However, if you buy refurbed you don't know why it was refurbed. It may have been used for a few years nothing wrong with it so they test it clean it and send it off. It could fail in just over a year and your done. I shouldn't have to say that, but it's true no? The thing may have been leased for all you know, you don't know and that is my point.
Sure it costs you more to buy new, but how much more of a hassle is it to buy refurbed? I personally don't know because I don't do it. Things break all the time thats why we as americans throw stuff away every week... myself included. Should someone like my junk and it fill a need somewhere's then that's great too.
May the force be with you... flicker~flicker

not to take away from your silly feud, but here is the same monitor on eBay, with the same seller, and there he clearly states that it is NEW.
