  • DVD Forum approves portion of new format

Interesting that they seemed to have gone for backward DVD compatibility. Used their heads for once.

TOKYO — An HD DVD format proposed by Toshiba Corp. and NEC Corp. as the next-generation DVD format was finally approved by the DVD Forum's steering committee during recent meetings in New York.

The proposal includes both read-only and rewritable formats, but only the ROM format in its 0.9 version was approved by the committee during meetings last week by a vote of 8-6.

yeah I saw that too... kinda makes you wonder tho why they only approved the ROM format. I think it's not really a victory at all. If it included the burnable media as well then it would be different.

It still leaves alot of holes as to what will be next. The door is still wide open on this one.
