    Xing was bought out by RealNetworks. After the buyout their software went without updates for well over a year (2 years?) and then the website went down. No more Xing as an independent entity.

    RealNetworks still sells the Xing MPEG Encoder, but not the DVD player or MP3 encoder. The MP3 encoder conflicted with their marketing of RealAudio and the DVD player had it's own issues;

    The Xing DVD player was found to have an un-encrypted version of the DSS compression in its installation. This allowed crackers to write the DeCSS DVD decoder program. This legally exposed Xing itself and killed their stock. Also their $250 USD MPEG encoder was crap in comparison to freeware offerings like bbMPEG and TMPGEnc. Now you know why Xing needed a takeover "partner".

    If you want a DVD player program that's better than Xing ever was then try WinDVD or Cinemaster. Both work great for me using the Toshiba decks.

      I think Cinemaster99 has slightly better playback quality than WinDVD, but WinDVD plays back SVCD disks whereas Cinemaster99 doesn't seem to.

      I think PowerDVD has the best feature set -- still frame capture etc, but I think it is clearly the worst of the three in playback quality.

      I've not done any exhaustive tests but I've seen these three on enough different systems to have formed this opinion.

          The best one is Cinemaster2000, but you are correct in that WinDVD plays back SVCD. I'd be willing to bet that in 6 months they all will ;-))

            Doc,

            Where did you get Cinemaster 2000?
            I bought another copy on the 27th from their website and all I saw offered was Cinemaster99.
