HDD SPEED
i have reformatted my Pc the other day, and my scsi IBM 9gb HDD [LVD] is showing a transfer rate of about 7.xx on the matrox benchmark, does that sound good for PAL editing ?

As long as you don't plan on using YUY2 captures and edits, yes. If you do then it's time to check out the new IDE drives which are SO MUCH FASTER...

what do u suggest in terms of brands, specs, speed. I have always loved MAXTOR... and often used IBM.
Do you think the Maxtor DiamonMAx 40 is a good one, or the new 75GB one from them, if u use the same i would apprciate the model numbers.
DO you really think i would benifit alot from a s/w RAID setup with 2 fast drives like those. [i am assuming that both drives would be ATA100 in any case]

The Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40/45/60 models are very good. IBM's 75GXP is just flat the fastest drive on the market.
As far as RAID's go I prefer using a Fasttrak100 card. I started using those after I had several soft-RAID fail under WinNT4.
Another Fasttrak100 advantage is that you can configure a Fasttrak100 array to be seen and used from multiple OS's: DOS, Win9x, Linux and Win2K/NT4, with appropriate drivers depending on the filesystem used. Win2K/NT4 software RAID's cannot do this and it can save your skin.
