  • Silly DV codec question

I am just now finally getting off of my butt and attempting to use my firewire with my DV camera. I am just wondering if there is a huge difference between the standard M$oft DV codecs and others like the one from Mainconcept.

If you have DX9, then there is no discernable difference. The MC codec was marginally better, under some conditions, with earlier MS codecs provided in DX. Of course, it may be that you can capture only using the MS one (some capture apps won't accept the MC codec), in which case you would have to convert to the MC one if you wish to use it.

I use only the MS one now, although I do have MC installed, as well.

Thanks for the info. I do have DX9 on here so I probably won't bother with anything else. It seems to work, but I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing anything important at the source.

        Hi,
Brian is right, the only think to consider about using the MC codec is that it 's type-2 dv codec and therefore the avi files created with this codec can be opened with vdub.

Yes, I figured that out. I am not using V-Dub for any of this right now, I am using MSP and the frame server to encode to DVD MPEG2. Seems to work pretty nice. Biggest problem I have now is that the wife didn't take the tripod with her and all the video looks less than great. Can't have everything I guess.
