  • Edited clips from video tape going to dv camera, frame or field based?

I am using some clips from a video tape for a project I am working on. The majority of the project will be clips shot on a dv camera.

I have captured them huffyuv (don't have the dv cam yet).

Should I process them to dv format frame based or field based?

I am confused. I would think to use field based since that's is their original format. But the dv template in MS Pro that is frame based says use this if you are going back to the dv camcorder.

The "on-line" dv format template in MS Pro is field based. Also confusing because you would think on-line means viewing on a computer monitor. In which case frame based would be better. Right?

Please straighten this out for me!

It shouldn't matter how you capture you footage if your editing it online. if your exporting back out to a dv camera you should be doing with Frames not fields. But that also depends on whether your footage was shoot in progressive scan mode or not (or frame mode for canon cameras). Progressive scan effectively removes fields from every frame of video so it runs smoother. So your best bet is to shoot in prgressive scan and export in frames for best quality. otherwise it should matter either way. exporting to dv should be in frames not fields anyways.

    hope that helped.

      So you're saying:

      1. If shooing progressive frame with the dv camera then edit and output to dv camera in progressive frame mode.

      2. If shooting interlaced (fields) with the dv camera then if doesn't matter how you output back to the camera. Fields or frames. Huh?

        My Version

        TV playback:
        DV files Field A
Some analogue Field B (Sometimes OK for revesre motion DV)

        Computer monitor playback:
        Frame based

Ulead Help file (Right click on a Video & go to Field options)

        <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size="2">
Frame type Select the frame type of your source clip when it was captured or created.

Flicker reduction Select to minimize jitter playback of frames if you intend to create a field-based video out of the original frame-based type.

Deinterlace Select if you have a field-based source clip with lots of fast movements and applied effects, transitions and moving paths in it for a more synthesized and smoother motion when played back.
