Is there a plugin that lets me edit .vob files in Premiere ?

Don't think so. You'll probably have to extract the MPEG-2 and edit that before re-authoring in something like DVDiT or DVDMotion.

But that's not exactly what I wanted to hear ...

I already extracted those VOBs onto HD, assigned .vob files to use the Cinemaster dll when playing in Mediaplayer for example and thus I thought Premiere would do the same, but all I get are crashes ...

I just want to avoid doing recompression twice, i.e. I have a tool that grabs those VOBs from DVD and converts them into MPEG1, 15Mbit datarate, I-frames, but as you can imagine, thos files are not only huge, but also filled with compressions artifacts so that the next compression results in somewhat (for me) unacceptable quality.

The only way around most of those artifacts is to have the extraction program create I-Frame only MPEG's just for editing, if it can do it. Without the B or P frames artifacting is reduced to no more than you would get using MJPeg at the same bitrate.

The rub will be that the I-Frame files will be even larger. Doing some file splitting at scene breaks might help keep the resulting files under 2/4 gigs, but it would be a daunting project.

Well, exactly that is my prob ...

Not only that those I-frame MPEGs are larger than the original VOBs, they are also showing some nasty artifacts already (I guess 15Mbit/sec is still too much compression, considering that PAL uncompressed is something like 30MByte/sec).

Therefore I'm looking for a way to edit VOBs directly.

Isn't it like VOBs are MPEG-2 streams anyway ?

I also tried some of the windows-like workarounds, e.g. renamed the .vob file to .mpg etc, but that didn't help at all ...

I'd also be willling to deal with a lossless vob2avi conversion if the resulting clips are uncompressed, although the resulting amount must be very huge ...

I just need something that allows the access those VOB file in the highest possible quality.

It seems that I'm lost in this case ...
