Looks like I'll be getting the professional model after all.

The online vendor with whom I placed the original order for the GR-HD1 phoned me with an advisory that the product was not in stock.

So I decided to switch to another vendor and I opted for the JVC JY-HD10 professional model.

Good news.

I just successfully captured a few minutes of HDV video using Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7.0, the new Ulead HDV Plug-in, and my slowest computer - an AMD Athlon XP2000+ (1.67ghz) system.

I didn't drop a single frame during the capture.

I'm impressed by HDV!

After you capture video recorded in this format, you can play it in Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7.0's VIDEO CAPTURE playback window and it's HUGE and WIDE.

The resolution is *very* much higher than that of standard DV25 - as expected.

Nevertheless, the shock of seeing the sheer resolution of this video is quite something.

I only had a little bit of time to record tonight, but I plan to do some more shooting this weekend.

I'll incorporate the information I gain in a new Web site article.

I had heard something about HDV1 and HDV2 formats, does anyone know anything about these?

Also, what is the colorspace of the JVC cam?

Both the JVC GR-HD1 and the JVC JY-HD10 are HDV format camcorders that utilize the 4:2:0 colorspace when shooting in high definition mode.

Both of these models shoot in three modes:

1. In DV mode, the cameras shoot standard 720 x 480 at 30 frames per second or 60 interlaced fields per second in a 4:3 aspect ratio.

2. In SD mode, the cameras shoot 720 x 480, 60 progressive frames per second (60p) in a true 16:9 aspect ratio. This is an MPEG-2 format.

3. The HD mode records 30p, 16:9 aspect ratio images at 1280 x 720.

I guess they went with the 4:2:0 colorspace to achieve a more balanced look.

Also, I'm curious. Since there isn't a delivery format for HDV right now, why did you decide to go with this format? I am assuming that the format holds up much better through editing to the final product, even if it is SD at the end of the process.

Also, you can do 16:9 with full resolution with this camcorder.

Any other reasons?

I have a feeling we're going to see the introduction of yet another new format at NAB...
