Okay I'm using Premier 5.1 to capture AVI
The capture is set to use YUY2 at 352x288
The capture card is a Matrox G200 Marvel
with the Flying Dutchman's YUY2 patch.

The AVI captured (no frame drops)when
played back as an AVI is excellent.
However, when I use TMPGEnc to convert to
an SVCD compliant MPEG-2 the quality of the
MPEG-2 is terrible, the colours are blotchy
and the definition of the picture is blocky
and smudged, if that makes any sense.

This seems to be regardless of settings in
TMPGEnc which gave acceptable results when
encoding AVI's produced from AVI using the
Matrox compression codec.

Any suggestions, or can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong ??

First off.. if you are converting avi's of 352*288, then you should convert them to MPEG1.. NOT mpeg2... .. also are you tweaking any of the setting for TMPGE or just using the default settings?

Really. I'd be using 2 pass VBR at 1850 max, 1400 average and 300 min data rates. I'd also use a high quality motion search, if needed. The VFAPI filters can be used to sharpen, adjust color balance & intensity, contrast and brightness.

There is a ton of control over the image quality in there if you look for it and play a bit.

Ummm

Thanks both I'r play around a bit at
480 x 576 and see what results I can get.

Have you tried XVCD I encoded a quick
sample from MPEG-1 CBR 3500kbit/s at
resolution 352x288 pixels 25fps.

The quality of XVCD looks very good payed back in my DVD the best I've managed so far very little blockiness almost the same quality of the playback of my VHS player on a 28" screen.
The only issue was a slight jerkyiness in playback almost as if the frame rate had reduced but the AVI and the mpeg played okay before I made the VCD ?
