  • ATA 100 - QUANTUM

I don't know specs of this disk(you can check Quantum site).
However i preferred Quantum disks since i discover that the only ata disks (66) with a buffer size larger than 512 KB are Western Digital Caviar(2 MB), now i have two of them (20 & 30 GB) and i'm very happy (16000 with Sandra 2001 and 12/14 MB/sec with Matrox HD bench).
So check out this spec and do not limit your evaluation at velocity.
Buffer size is very important when you have to manage a large amount of data such as in video capture.

offhand I'd say that the Maxtor/Ibm/WD drivers are gonna blow away that POS Quantum. (As usual).

      ATA 100 - QUANTUM

      hey guys,

can anyone advise on whether the Quantum Fireball 60Gb 7200rpm ATA100 HDD is a good disk, or should one stick to Maxtor / IBM at that size. It would obviously be a extra video disk [no OS on it]

      The price has attracted me - us$ 240 !

If that Quantum is the AS-series, you don't have the fastest drive, but it sure is fast enough for video. A bit faster will be the IBM 75GXP-series. My 45GB gives an Matrox HD-benchmark of 24MB/s on an Promise Ultra100 controller.

does a rate such as 24mb/s really make a difference in other applications such as Photoshop, etc or is it just in the transfer of video ? Also du you think that will sort my lag problem with permiere during scrubbing ?

          thnx

if i want to put 2 3gig maxtors on a Promise Card ATA100, what i reality is the performance diference between using the Ultra100 card or the FT100 card ?

The Promise raidcard is certainly fast with two drives, but this does depend on the drives you are using. The 3GB Maxtors seem old to me, and probably are not as fast as a new 15GB IBM 75GXP drive. But that's just a thought.
