  • Editing a DVD Movie

    Hi,

I recently made a DVD from a home video (I used NERO), which put the video files in the .VOB format. I was wondering, is there any way for me to edit the .VOB files; that is, can I somehow decode the .VOB to .avi, so I can edit them again. I know there are programmings for ripping the .VOB files to .mpg, but they are lossy - I want lossless!

there are vob tools for splitting and joining vob's they are pretty much lossless if done at the correct points.

But you will be doing manual editing, ok if there is not alot of actual editing to do, butr a royal pain if there is.

Ones I used in the past(distant) were vobsplit and vobjoin, (very deceiveing names

go to the download section at

    and look for vob tools

I recently had to do just that: a friend received a DVD (technical subject with no audio) and he asked me whether I could make a few edits, including a sub-title showing the origin, for inclusion in a different DVD he was compiling.

I converted the VOB very successfully to MPEG-2, pretty well losslessly simply by renaming the extension, did the edits in MSP 7.01 and re-rendered it. The results were not exactly brilliant, even though the original had been made at 8000 kbit/s CBR and my re-encoding was done with the new, excellent, DVD-WS2 encoder, also at 8000 CBR. Inserted into the other footage, which was encoded directly from DV AVI at the same rate, the quality difference unfortunately sprang out to the eye.

AFAIK, there is nothing to convert vobs back to avi, simply because the losses are already there and you cannot restore what is already lost.

Thanks for the note! I didn't realize that you could simply rename the .VOB extension to .MPG, and it would play properly!

Unfortunatly my mpeg editor would not let me cut the files, for some reason it does not like the renamed .VOB files. Any recommendations? How is MSP 7?

Only as long as the original vobs were encoded with Mpeg audio - if not, you are likely to end up with the sound of silence or an upset editor...............

One way of doing the job is to use DVDRemake.

Load your DVD (VIDEO_TS) into DVDRemake, process and export.

Import the processed DVD chapters into Ulead DVD Workshop 2. and do the editing there. You can also use any other software that allows DVD import.

This is the only way I have managed to edit a DVD recorded from VHS directly to a standalone DVD recorder.
