  • What about WinME?

OK, I'm prepared to be beaten up on this one. I haven't noticed many people asking about WinME. I am still using 98SE with considerable success, but I am under the impression that ME is just an upgrade from 98. I know that everyone seems to want to go to Win2000, (NTFS and USB support), but this is an upgrade from NT4 which has had history of problems with the Marvel. If this is the case then why are the drivers for WinME display only? Is there a dramatic difference? I also was wondering about DirectX 8. I thought that I saw somewhere that it wasa bad idea to install with the G400 and MSP6. Maybe I am imagining things.

Anyway what I am getting to is

    1. Are there advantages to WinME?

    2. Will it work with the 98 drivers for the Marvel?

    3. What is the deal with DirectX 8 (Good and bad)?

    1. None I can see. In fact it's slightly slower than Win98SE and breaks several Win9x drivers. The IEEE-1394 support is a bit better though....

    2. Dunno. Removed it as soon as I did some benchmarks.

    3. Works, especially if you are using a generic DV card. The new DV codec is a huge improvement, especially for PAL users where the color problems have been largely fixed.

My suggestion: wait for the Win2K drivers. It's well worth the wait.

I have 98se and directx 8.1a. I can capture with G400 + RR using MSP6. I haven't tried any editing recently. Before upgrading to 98me make sure all of your drivers support it. And if you notice the test sites, they almost exclusively use 98se.

I think that is my problem. I get all of this stuff working and I get bored. I'm not much on editing, but if there is a problem with my PC, I get all excited. I guess I'm just a glutton for punishment.

Maybe I should downgrade to 3.1 or something, maybe I'll have enough headaches then!

If your a glutton for punishment then maybe you should try and upgrade to 98me. If you're typical at least one item won't work. If all goes well you can always try uninstalling it.
