I feel the upgrade to P4 should wait a while for several reasons;
1. CPU cost. Intel is predicting <$1000 P4 systems later this year. Now you'll pay about $850 for just the 1.4ghz CPU. Read here;
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/3/17189.html
2. RIMM cost. RIMM is still too expensive and P4 boards can use nothing but.
3. Performance. The advanatges of the P4 have yet to be seen. In short until P4 optimized products appear you'll be suffering from "early adopter-itis". Bragging rights but no real advantages. In fact the P4 acutuall works SLOWER with many current products.
4. By the time all the other factors align the current crop of P4 mainboards will be outdated and may be incapable of using 2ghz models when they appear.
I'd wait 'til later this summer when the stars align, prices drop and the software appears.

thanx doc for the SOUND advice ! i guess you convinced me off the P4 once again ! Now i am stuck with the decision over which P3 MOBO, i would prefer an ASUS as usual, but i can't get the P3b where i live, i really don't want the VIA chipset [ASUS] what do u recommend, the other option, is obviously the CuSL2[c]...
one more do u recommed the PIII 800 or u think there's merit in a PIII 1Ghz ?
the RAM will be 512 or 1Gig.
thnx Doc.

I think you should consider buying an Athlon system because Athlon are cheaper and faster than PIII.
If you buy PIII, be aware that i815 chipset are limited to 512Mb RAM. VIA chipsets (for PIII or Athlon) doesn't have this limit (I think their limit is 1.5Gb RAM).

thnax for your response. I have never assembled an ATHALON machine noe tought of using one, do u recommend... even in terms of stability ? If so, which Processor [speed...etc] and MOBO [brand]do you recommend ? Thanx.Asus P2B @ 100Mhz

You have to be careful with Via northbridge chipset motherboards. Lots of "thruput" problems getting smooth DV export and output to tape -- check various MSP, Premiere, and Vegas Video forums if you don't believe me.
I've an 700MHz Athelon that I've been testing for the past month or so and so far so good. Its an ASUS K7M with AMD 750 northbridge and Via "superIO". It performed admirably with ADS Pyro, G450, using Premiere6 and MSP6.
Only glitch is capture with Hauppauge WinTV card -- certain resolutions with certain recompression codecs in AVI_IO produce garbage AVI files (colored snow) despite showing no dropped frames and looking fine in preview. I've not had a chance to verify that these combinations work on my PIII-500 BX chipset system, although I pretty sure they did.
Problem is K7M is slotA and won't go beyond 800MHz as far as I can tell.
I believe Doc has said you need Via KT133a northbridge and 684b soutbridge without Highpoint IDE controller chip to have a good AMD system for NLE. This would match other reports I've been seeing, although I've not had the chance to try such a system myself.

For an Athlon (T-Bird) you'd probably be best going for a KT133 or KT133A chipset!
However, you might be better asking for some help in General Hardware as well, and see if the system the general techies matches these video guys
And I'd also go for a pair of IBMs

Doc Mordrid!
While everythimg can (and will be) said about the quality about VIA chipset MOBO's consider this:
On win95/A/B/c when using LX --> chipsets there is a NEED for Intels equivelent to VIA4IN1 ( Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility) othervise it doesent work at full capacity.
Win98also needs "Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility" for any Intel chipset above BX to get working.
AND even W2K needs the above mentioned patch to work with I815 and up!!
There is NO way to make NEW hardware that is recognised corectly by OLD OS code!!
Most new VIA boards actualy works without the 4IN1 but not at full capacity!If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.
