  • what mpeg2 encoder should I be using

    Hi,
what mpeg2 encoder should I be using? After I have a edited avi in premeire 6.5, I export with the adobe mpeg encoder. I've also used the ligos.I think there is a mainconcept as well, but I can't find it. How do I make a 2 pass vbr encode? I have a matrox rt.x100. What will give me the best vrb mpeg2 encode? I had some footage with lots of motion and the results look bad. What would you recomend for quality , not speed.

ps How do I find if there is a new driver for the rt.x100?

The latest MainConcept one is stupendous, if the version in Ulead DVDWS2.2 is anything to go by. Much better than the earlier ones. There is also TMPGEnc, but I've stopped using it as it is not better and is a bit of a pig to configure. Both are 2-pass. Ligos is not as good.

I second Brian's opinion. I used to use ONLY TMPGEnc but now only use the MC encoder in DVDWS2.2. It's so good that you should worry more about the quaity of your source video rather than the encoder quality.

Make that three recommendations for MainConcept 1.4. It encodes very nice files and can do it in near or faster than realtime on an AthlonXP 2400+ system. It even has a TV tuner/MPEG capture module for use with cards that are so inclined

Will any of these work as an export from premiere 6.5 as a two pass vrb, and be better then the adobe encoder? I'm going for quality, not speed. But thanks for the advice so far.

Yes, and Mainconcept is very reasonably priced if you own premeire 6.5 or pro.

Hi to all...at this point of the chat, maybe it would be usefull to fix
some details ,though it has been talken about before:what are
the differences between the flavors of MC encoder:
                    MSP6.51 -"Mpeg-Now"
Ulead dvd movie factory 2 and 3
                    Ulead dvd workshop
                    MSP7
maybe i'm wrong thinking it all come from MC so the post is important !!

There are very important differences, as the encoders have evolved.

At the moment, the only Ulead product with the latest version (which I mentioned above) allowing 2-pass encoding is DVDWS 2.2. Of course, other products may, in time, have new versions or updates with this improved version.

The next best can be found in DVDWS 2.0 and DVDMF 3. (DVDWS 2 can be patched to 2.2 free-of-charge, though)

After that comes MSP 7.01 and MF2.

Finally, the oldest one is MSP 6.51.

So, you have at least 4 levels of evolution in the Ulead stable. Each new level offers improved quality and, in some cases, rendering time. I consider that the bottom two levels are good but not as good as the modern ones or TMPGEnc. The top two levels are ZE BEST, especially the 2-pass one!
