Smart De-interlace in VirtualDub

Has anyone used the De-Noise filter and if so can they explain what it does? I tried two identical files with and without the filter and they came out exactly the same size. The desription in the help file is a bit cryptic and so if it is any good what are the best settings to use for full PAL interlaced captures? Thanks.
