  • Xbox with Samsung drive and DVD+R

... it's probably old news to you guys here, but I always accepted it as a fact that Xbox's with a Samsung DVD-engine would never read DVD+R media, only DVD-R/W and DVD+RW, as opposed to those with a Philips/Thomson drive which reads everything.

Yet I had 2 DVD+R Verbatim discs I made once on a blue monday, which work perfectly on the Xbox.

As you might expect, the answer was booktype/bitsetting. I was always led to believe the booktype-setting only had influence on the older DVD-players. This is false. Even on very new DVD-players, the booktype setting makes a world of difference. In my personal case, it meant relativly cheap Ricoh based DVD+R media written at 8x went from "totally unusable" to "100% glitch free playback". Even the worst 4x junk DVD+R I could find suddenly gave absolutly flawless results.

The main problem however seems to be, companies like NEC seem to disable booktype-setting capability in their official firmware. It's a bit daft you have to resort to hacked firmware to enable a 100% official part of the DVD+R platform to ensure compatibility, but it's definitly worth the little extra trouble.
