  • Interlacing 50fps PAL video

    Hi,

I've been playing with MotionPerfect on some old TV clips. These clips were originally recorded on interlaced PAL video but now only telerecordings exist in which both fields have been merged into one field.

Using my Marvel G400 I captured these with HuffYUV at 320x288 25fps. I then used MotionPerfect to create a 50fps file. For those who don't know, MotionPerfect will use motion-estimation to create 'new' frames.

So now I am left with a 50fps file which runs great on my external TV - exactly the kind of 'interlaced feel' I was hoping to recreate. But how can I make this into a normal interlaced 25fps file? My eventual result I would like to put onto SVCD or VHS.

hope someone can think of something!

    Can't anyone think of something?

Interesting discovery: using the Marvel dmb1 codec you don't get the interlaced 'feel' on the TV, but using the Morgan codec you do. It seems the Matrox driver doesn't like 50fps streams.

Come on! It can't be that difficult can it?

Adobe After Effects 4.0 can do this , its an interesting idea let us know
what it looks like on a TV screen.

thanks Zeb7, I was getting desperate!

It looks fantastic on a TV - the telerecordings look just like video rather than film. In fact I've tried it with film material, and made it look like it was shot on video. I actually prefer the 'smoothness' and fluidity of movement with interlaced video.

I've recorded my experiments onto VHS, and they play back perfectly. I haven't been able to convert to SVCD yet because the 50fps files were rejected. As I said before the Matrox MJPEG codec has severe problems with them as well, the Morgan codec gives perfect results.

Well, thanks for giving me that information about After Effects. I shall have to investigate...

sorry, but could you quickly explain how I would do that in After Effects...?

              Hi, J.O.N.

Well i've had more time to think about the problem , and there's a much faster way
a little but powerful program called AVIsynth , its prog that got around problems for me before
Think of it like a Virtual AVI file , its actually a text file with a link to the AVI file ( like a window shortcut file)
after down loading and install you will need to make a script file ( the shortcut ) with the processing you would
like done to the avi file.
i've made the script file copy a paste there lines into a new *.txt file (NotePad ) then rename the file to "50two25.avs"

              AVISource("D:\50fps AVI from motion prefect.avi")
              AssumeFieldBased.Weave
              SwapFields

The top line is the location of you're AVI file so rename it
Line two Weaves 2 frames together
Line three SwapFields just delete this line if you don't need to SwapFields

Load 50two25.avs Into VirtualDub, as you see VirtualDub thinks the file is a 25fps AVI
              Save new AVI.

              Link to AVIsynth

The Morgan codec must have yuv modes enabled or you get a blank avi
AAFX was a bit overkill for this task , apologies for my earlier post.

Mr Zeb7 you are an absolute genius and saint. I had read mentions of AVISynth but stupidly never bothered to look at it properly. What a great tool!
