  • calling ATI ViVo owners and knowledgeable others - help!!

I've been putting off video capture with my recently acquired ati 9200 vivo for fear that things wouldn't go well/easily. Now I have to edit a wedding video and of course my attempts to digitise footage are failing.

VideoStudio SE (v.7 & v.8) ceases or quits when I open the "capture" window. Premiere 6 captures footage but it has lines through it and a big dirty green patch on the bottom fifth of the frame. Similarly, VirtualDub shows a very dirty image with banding and lots of noise.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get this puppy working properly or know of a good website that details working with these cards? I've checked out videohelp.com but material specific to the ViVo cards is scarce indeed. I'm using WinXP by the way.

    Thanks in advance.

I would stick to the ati/mmc for capturing video.
The editing you can do with other software.

Thanks guys, I'll try rageunderground and BTW Smitty, it's fine to leave links. As for mmc, I'm in the process of downloading it from the ATI website as it didn't come with my card. The whole suite is over 50mb, which isn't easy on a 56k dialup connection where the ISP's server sporadically resets. I think I'll also try the very latest drivers too. Who knows how long that'll take to download!

I am using Asus Radeon 9600XT (VIVO) and never had any problems with capturing.

I am using WinDVR that capture directly in MPEG-2 and then edit in UMSP 7, using a template that also gives me Smart Rendering.

            @Debbie

Did you use the drivers and related software that came on the CD with your card and all was well or did you get newer drivers from ATi? Did you have to get any additional software like Multimedia Centre, Control Panel, Control Center, etc.?

            Thanks

Just the drivrs that came with the card. None of the other bundled software.

I have tried to use updated drivers from ATI but the control panel drivers did'nt work well. It appears, at least with my card, that only the supplyer (Asus) drivers work well.

                Hi,
i have an Asus 9600 XT (vivo) and everything works fine. I have updated the drivers 3 or 4 times (the latest being from ati) and never had problems. However, i have never installed and used ATI's MMC, instead i use avi_io for capturing.

I have a almost 2 year old ATI 9700 Pro AIW card and have installed several updates to the MMC and the standard driver (running CAT 4.11 & MMC 9.02). I have no problems capturing using 3rd party (ie AVI_IO & VirtualDub) or MMC. The machine I do the capturing on is Titan (see sig for specs)...

Thanks everyone but nothing's working for me here. The closest I got to a good picture was in win98se with the factory drivers and VideoStudio 7se where I saw a clean and stable picture but one that was marred by cyclic or pulsing distortion. Every two or three seconds, the picture would go bright then dark, or simply stutter with black banding.

Since I want to enjoy my Christmas I've gone back to the last working configuration I had for digitising video, which is win98se, Matrox Marvel and the SoundBlaster. Guess I'll try mucking around with the newer hardware again next year but I'm almost at my wits end...

I've been using ATI AIW cards for capture since the AIW128 a long time ago. Currently I have the AIW 9000 Pro. With the older cards I used to capture with avi_io, but with this card the ATI MMC is so good I have no reason to use 3rd party software. I would suggest setting the capture codec to huffyuv or PICVideo and capture using the ATI MMC. I'm running XP and have captured over 2 hours without dropping a frame or other anomaly.

Yes, I'm definitely getting the impression from the reading I've been doing that ATI MMC is the way to go for capturing with this card. That'll be the first thing to try when I finish this project with the Marvel. I actually downloaded ATI MMC but somewhere along the line the file was corrupted and since it's a huge download across a dialup modem connection, I wasn't up to trying it again. Guess I'll have to try again next year...
