Here was my solution to the Vegas oddities....

      START/Settings/Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs....

        Please remember :

When posting queries it is IMPERATIVE to include at least basic details of what capture card and operating system you are using.

        Unfortunately we aren't all psychic.

            SmarA** mode off;

Really, I tried Vegas with the G400 Marvel and found it wanting. Too twitchy. Besides, it's more geared for DV anyhow.

I haven't had the pleasure yet, although if someone would be kind enough to point me (especially with regard to a specific email addy to a rep in marketing) then I will be glad to immerse myself in the product AND REPORT THE FINDINGS.

Really, I'm always on the sniff for contacts within suitable corps in either the hardwre or software areas. Just in case this produces a snowstorm of emails, please use chrisday@cableinet.co.uk in addition to the normal addy, as I am having some probs with the normal hosting

You can download a demo version of Vegas Video from www.sonicfoundry.com Be sure to also get the capture/output tool and docs.

The capture tool is worth while even if you don't like VV.

HuffYUV doesn't preview well in MSP6 or Premiere6 either, but you should have recognizable images.

For me on W2K, HuffYUV appears to edit OK in Premiere or MSP but ouputs are garbage -- colored snow -- on non-rendered parts unless you force a re-render of the whole output -- i.e. turn off smart render, wich kind of defeats the whole purpose for me.

The option to smartrender on export is on the Create/Video File/Video Editor tab.

VV is EXCELLENT for audio. No more shitty rubber bands a la MSP/Premiere, you can size the wave to your whole screen if you so desire.

I use VV to do my multitrack soundfx, having done the edit on DC1000/Prem6 and rendered to software codec

With the speed of modern hardware and the stability of software codecs I anticipate soon ditching the DC1000 except for DVD work, and working almost exclusively in DV format. I know it makes sense :-)

(hell, I used to edit with a software codec when I had my old Rainbow Runner cos it was more stable!)

Now that Sonic Foundry is selling the Vegas Video ($389 USD), Vegas Videofactory ($49 USD), and Videofactory packaged with a Pyro 1394 card ($99 USD) at, of all places, Best Buy, I'm wondering just how good any of that stuff has gotten since their initial introduction last year of the free download, and a first run price up around $700 - $800.

I was not impressed with the cryptic UI in the original free demo last year, and found that it installed stuff that was immediately problematic for my MSP6 platform. Consequently, I dumped it pretty quickly.

However, I have a healthy respect for Sonic Foundry and the well written software that they've been producing for audio all these years. This is evident in VV from what Miker has posted, too. So, it would really be interesting to have someone post here who has actually latched onto Vegas Video for their DV editing, and likes it. The trouble is that nobody seems to be using it at all! And I wonder if this is only because anyone and everyone who has ever looked at it is simply accustomed to long time usage of either Ulead or Adobe stuff for their editing.

The big item for me would be if the latest version of Vegas Video was more problem free than either MSP6 or Premier6 for DV, AND was rivaling the features, too.

The problem with VV is that you are on another learning curve. I found the switch from MSP to Prem4/5/6 virtually transparent.

Editing video in VV is not too intuitive I find, also I have a lot of investment in Prem6 in form of plugins.

But if I ever find a Firewire card compatible with my Panny DX110B I will being giving VV some serious project work on the video side of things.

All Adobe need do is learn from Sonic Foundry ;-)
