The same things could be said of the various countries who are using Russian, European, Chinese, North Korean, Indian or even Mexican made arms to do the same thing. The US isn't the only sinner in this regard.

    The only thing stopping Cyprus from doing it is that they are;

    1. too small make it practical

    2. too busy getting others to fight their civil war

The problem with throwing mud on this issue is that just about everyone ends up with some on their face.

    Flame ON

Also those of you in the eastern Med. and southeast Europe have to get over the ramifications of what happened 500+ years ago. It's more than tiresome for the rest of us to be on the brink of yet another indo-European war just for the sake of religious conflicts and petty bickering. It seems every time you guys let yourselves fall into one of these fiascoes it's the United States, Britain and Canada that has to bail you out and rebuild. This has been going on for 100 years and it is getting old.

I myself have lost too many relatives in the last 2 European wars to like what I'm seeing now. What's happened in Cyprus over the last 30-40 years is just a localized extension of the same cultural silliness that is tearing apart the former Yugoslavian states.

Also, the only reason Turkey is in NATO and has access to ams under said treaty was to secure southern Europe from any intrusions from that direction and to obtain intelligence gathering sites close to the USSR's nuclear testing grounds during the Cold War. Sorry if the rest of Europe and North America thought that was more important than the bickering in Cyprus....

At least Americans & Canadians TRY to sort out our domestic squabbles in an semi-intelligent manner. I don't see any such efforts in your region. Everyone falls back on their religious hatred, grabs their AK-47, rocket launcher & a few sniper rifles and goes at the whole population of the other "persuasion". Even the children.

We may have our moments, but I haven't seen any Sarajvo's or anything of that sort here dispite our problems. And we don't sell AK-47's and other cheapo arms. It's the Russians, Chinese, North Koreans and French who serve the low end market, so have a go at them.

As for any "saber rattling" that comes out of the USA, deal with it.

After watching others start, or worse yet: not prevent, fights that we have to finish and clean up after pardon us if we try to scare some sanctimonious SOB out of doing it again. If that offends someone, oh well.

    Flame OFF

I don't want to get into the highly techincal parts of this thread, although I do hope somebody somewhere is working on something to deal with those big rocks hurtling through space that are too big for our atmosphere turn into a quaint "shooting star."

I do want to fess up that I too am a hunter. It is a part of me and I love doing it. It is very easy for others to say that my intent is just to blast some poor beast for the sheer fun of it, but that's far from the truth. I have sat in the woods on cold pre-dawns and asked myself why am I out here? Is it just the fun? I know I am out here for a deer or a turkey, but, why? I get plenty of food from the grocer or the restaurant, so why?

There is no simple explanation for things one does that are part instinct and part desire. Other things in nature, and in my own midst, though, do help me understand.

Arriving back home after my hunt, most times with no animal, and, in fact having passed up several shots that were less than perfect (so much for just wanting to blast something) I then observe my well-fed cat in my yard stalking a morning dove or a chipmunk. All his instincts working; eyes, ears, even his feet sensing the underground movements of a mole or other digger. He is not intelligent enough, or perhaps I should say "enlightened" enough to ask himself why he is hunting when he has plenty of food. He just does it. Perhaps, though, deep within, he wonders if the food we provide will always be there or will he have to turn to the land and if he had to turn to the land, how would he remember how to do it?

For a moment, my mind returns to the woods and visualizing myself sitting there, cold in my blind, I know that part of my hunt is just to keep those ancient instincts keen. Seeing, hearing, feeling, surviving. The bar-boasting and bragging are a part of it too. It's the celebration upon bringing back to the village the meat that will help the people make it through the winter and of course it's the satisfaction of meeting of the challenge, the end-zone dance, the ability to say "I braved the cold and the wind and the rain and had a successful hunt. I did it."

For what it's worth, if I do take an animal, especially a deer, it ends up being donated to the feeding of many people whom I have never met. A turkey is more likely to end up on my table. I am not ashamed of hunting. I will never be ashamed of it. I am certainly no Jeremiah Johnson but I do think that anyone who by force or voluntarily turned back to the land, would hunt and would do so very effectively. I am thankful for those instincts.

Unfortunately we're all stuck in a nasty web our government has been busy weaving for the last 8 years.

You can't CONTROL anyone except yourself and the only way to lead is by example.

              Yup.

I always thought the national flag that best signified most Americans international attitude was the one with a coiled rattlesnake and the words "Don't tread on me" underneath.

              http://www.free-market.net/images/ga...s/gadsden1.gif

              This song goes nicely with it;

              ======snip======

              "Don't Tread On Me"

Liberty or death, what we so proudly hail
once you provoke her, rattling of her tail
never begins it, never, but once engaged...
never surrenders, showing the fangs of rage

              don't tread on me

              so be it
              threaten no more
to secure peace is to prepare for war
              so be it
              settle the score
touch me again for the words that you'll hear evermore...

              don't tread on me

love it or live it, she with the deadly bite
quick is the blue tongue, forked as lighting strike
shining with brightness, always on surveillance
the eyes, they never close, emblem of vigilance

              don't tread on me

              so be it
              threaten no more
to secure peace is to prepare for war
              so be it
              settle the score
touch me again for the words that you'll hear evermore...

              don't tread on me

              so be it
              threaten no more
to secure peace is to prepare for war

liberty or death, what we so proudly hail

Hmm, sounds about as valid as using "Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz" as an advert.

IE. Not in the spirit in which it was conceived.

Anyway, there's plenty I'd like to say about war, anti-war, exploitation and globalism. But I shan't, as I expect the forum moderator to be "moderate". And that's me.

The forum policy has always been open, short of personal abuse, but there's an element of radical jingoism creeping in which is rubbing me up the wrong way. So take a tip - quit while the going's good !

Anyways, who won the second world war ?

Yep, got it in one - The Coca Cola company !

Yes, Chris, this is taking too much importance in a forum about NLE.
Anyway, I don't have anything to add, by his replies and comments Doc demonstrated my point with far more eloquence than I could have exercised.

Sorry if my comments seem so harsh, but over here there is a very strong sentiment in the US that the issues over there have affected us far more than is logical.

As such many folks tolerance of regional conflicts where our guys have to finish the fight or "peacekeep" with targets on their back is very short, as is my own reaction to criticism of some US policies (arms sales) where other nations (France, Germany, Russia etc.) are selling far more to far worse people than we are.

Where and who is involved doesn't matter when you've lost a grandfather, three uncles and two cousins to such silliness, not counting the wounded (my father).

Race or nationality has nothing to do with it. Long term cultural conflicts that defy logic and lead to generalized warfare does.

End of my comments on this....

And the answer is so simple -"thou shalt not kill". Nowhere in this noble book did I read the word "Except"...
